From Steven's perspective it looked like the chair he'd just sat on had vanished. In fact it had never existed in his original reality. This caused him to fall on to his backside on the hard office floor as he issued a loud scream. The cloud of smoke heralding his arrival back in his own universe hovered above him. It was almost like it was looking downwards mocking him before it dissipated into nothingness.
Nobody was more surprised than both Elizabeth and Liz who'd watched the whole process happen. Elizabeth was the first to speak as Steven slowly got to his feet. "Where have you been poppet? We've been so worried about you," she said in fake sincerity.
Liz glared at her. "Well some of us at least," the supervisor said.
Steven rubbed his sore behind. He looked out the window, relieved to see the supermarket was still present. "I've seen the future. A world like this one where it's 2020 not 2010."
"Right," Elizabeth said before giving a look to Liz that made it clear the manager had some doubts about Steven's sanity.
Liz jumped to her friend's defence. "Come on Elizabeth, something obviously happened. He vanished and reappeared."
"But visiting the future? How the heck did he get there?"
"Good question," Liz said before spinning around to face him. "How the chuff did you get there?"
Steven started to explain. "It wasn't the future as such. It was a different reality where I guess time moves slightly faster or something like that. I'm still trying to get my head around it. I was able to cross the boundary beyond our universe and travel to the other where events that have yet to happen, have in fact happened." He felt quite proud of his explanation.
"Hm," said Elizabeth, "do you think you could explain it a bit more succinctly? I'm a busy woman." She glanced at the day planner on her desk which was completely empty.
"Sorry Elizabeth, I'm just worried you may be a bit sceptical about by method of conveyance."
Liz moved closer too him. "Stop beating around the bush and just tell us how you chuffing got there."
Steven gulped at Liz's dominating presence. "A magic clock," he said meekly.
"I see," said Elizabeth before putting on a calmer voice. "Wilkinson likes to pride itself in being a supportive employer and if you feel your work is causing stress induced hallucinations we fully –"
"I didn't imagine it Elizabeth. I know magic is real." Steven said, deciding for once in his life to stand his ground.
Both his superiors stared at him wordlessly. It was obvious neither took him seriously.
"I can prove it." He recalled the swapping powers he was given earlier on. Although he'd forgotten them during the excitement of travelling universes, he was fully prepared to use them right now.
