With her work apron stuff into her tote bag, and her ponytail pulled loose at last, Katie was done with her afternoon shift.
It was 7pm on a September evening, and the sun was just starting to set. Katie took her time on the way back home, meandering through the woods enjoying the last gasps of summer before autumn could sink its teeth in. Despite the cheery air though, there was a note of tension among the trees.
“Oh dear!”
Instinctively, Katie prickled at the voice. Of another girl, perhaps her own age, she sounded panicked and lost.
Her mind was already made up. Even if nothing was wrong and this mystery girl was just randomly panicking, it would put her mind at ease to know nothing was wrong.
“Hello?” She called, her voice calm and collected by comparison. At that moment though, a pale girl with jet black hair and an old fashioned looking dress stumbled out of the undergrowth.
“Ma’am?” The young woman recoiled in confusion. “Oh! But you’re so young! How silly of me!”
“S-sorry there, still got my work brain in.” Katie itched at her hair. “Were you the one screaming a moment ago?”
“I was…!” The girl gasped. “You see, I was trapped in this forest, and feared the worst! But then I found you…!”
“Don’t worry about it. I’m just happy you weren’t in any danger.” Katie smiled. “So um… I’m Katie.”
“Hello Katie! It’s lovely meeting you!” The girl beamed. “I’m Snow White! Tell me, do you know of a remote cottage, or perhaps a secluded thicket populated by woodland creatures? I’m ever so lost!”
Katie blinked a few times until the sentence made sense. This girl sure talked odd.
