Refusal

Fran takes you by the shoulders and stares at you seriously.

“I don't have any idea what you're talking about.” she says firmly.

“I was taken,” you say, “The people at KARC, they—“

“But if I did,” she continues, cutting you off, “I'd advise you that talking about anything before placement is a very bad idea here at King University. People who fail to... acclimate don't stick around long. And I don't mean they go home.”

She looks you in the eyes as she continues.

“You are Denise McLain. You are a member of Tau Gamma sorority. Whatever you were, whoever you were before arriving at King doesn't matter. Not to them. And it had better not matter to you either, at least not visibly. Do you understand?”
