"What's this all about, mom." you asked, concerned.
"Have we done something to upset you?" asked Jan.
Mom sighed. "Fifteen years ago, your father and I met on the field of battle in a secret war that still rages between witches and mad scientists." she said. "We were both healers, neither one really interested in fighting so we worked together, as a team, trying to keep our growing friendship a secret."
"So there is a war." you thought, startled. "But that would mean..." "No!" you said, out loud, alarmed.
"Your perception is correct, Chis." said dad, calmly. "Your mother is a witch and I am a quote, unquote, 'mad' scientist. Your mother and I became very close or the next several months, helping to heal the wounded on both sides, earning us a many friends... and a few enemies."
"We both ran away from the war shortly after falling in love and had a private wedding with only a handful of our closest friends to participate." said mom, continuing. "To this day, we are both considered rogues by some of own people because we did the unthinkable, we married the enemy."
"Less than a year later, you two were born and we knew you each had great power." added dad. "We both decided to train you as best as we could, without ever mentioning the war, hoping you would never learn of it." he sighed. "We were both naive to think that we could keep the war out forever. My laboratory gave warning that Lieutenant Zed was inside the house, your mother and I witnessed the entire encounter."
"You 'saw' that?" you asked, nervous.
"We did and we are very proud of you both for defending each other." said mom. "However, Zed now knows that you two have sided with each other and will treat you, Jan, as one of the enemy witches."
Jan swallowed down a hard lump then steeled himself. "Let him believe what he wants!" he said. "I am protecting my family, I have no interest in any war!"
"I feel the same way." you said, quickly. "Jan and I may fight but don't get the wrong idea, it's for training only."
"That is why we have decided to give you each a few lessons in the other's power." said dad. "I will teach you, Chris, some of the basics of mad science while mom will teach your bother, Jan, some of the basics of magic."
"This will allow you both to defend yourselves more quickly in case someone tries to get you involved in this war." said mom. "The only issue is that only girls can work magic and only boys can work mad science..."
"So we'll have to switch genders for a while." you said with a sigh. "For how long?"
"Just for the weekend, no longer." said mom. "What do you say?"
