This is where it all started. The 5-year mission of the Starship Enterprise is, as the series goes, "to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before." Captain James T. Kirk, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Leonard McCoy, Science Officer Mr. Spock, and other characters find truth, peace, and justice throughout the galaxy. In the 2260s, their scientific knowledge is much greater than our own, but many types of phenomena remain as inexplicable to them as it does to us. It allows plot devices to combine the best of the science fiction and fantasy genres, and alterations of the mind and body are no exception to those plot devices. In this Interactive story, the Star Trek TOS universe of an existing episode will experience some form of change. Below are two examples which might provide a good start, since they already involve body swapping or possession. The third choice is left to the reader for other episodes for inspiration.
Choice 1: Turnabout Intruder (Season 3, Episode 24; synopsis here ; episode here )
In the series finale, Kirk and Dr. Janice Lester, who shared a romantic relationship with him in the past, swap bodies through the use of an ancient artifact. Dr. Lester is obsessed with becoming a Starship captain; Kirk is trapped in her body and tries to warn the crew of her intentions. The transfer has an apparent time limit, and the device itself is located in the colony on Camus II, which had been devastated by radiation exposure except for the remaining two survivors (Lester and Dr. Arthur Coleman, her unscrupulous assistant). Plot devices might include: beaming a portion of the device onto the Enterprise for analysis, what happens if the transfer doesn't wear off and Kirk and Janice do not swap back, what happens if Janice succeeds in killing Kirk in her body, subsequent body swaps on the planet surface, and so on.
Choice 2: Return to Tomorrow (Season 2, Episode 22; synopsis here ; episode here )
Several hundred light years beyond Federation-explored space, the Enterprise finds a destroyed planet where its only life are three pure-energy entities. They used to be humanoids, as powerful and intelligent as gods, but are now confined to sphere-shaped receptacles. They have the power to possess and exchange forms with any crewman on the ship. This leads to Kirk, Spock, and Lieutenant Commander (Doctor) Ann Mulhall being possessed by Sargon, Henoch, and Thalassa, respectively. Their stated goal is to build android bodies to live out the remainder of their existence, but the temptation of having real, physical bodies intrigues them. Plot devices might include: possession of other members on the Enterprise, body swaps between characters, continuing to build the androids, what happens if Henoch is not destroyed, and so on.
