Ross and Brady woke to be sitting in rocking chairs on the porch of a cabin. They were dressed in worn bib overalls and shoeless. Neither could move except a facial twitching and a palsied clenching of their fists.
Ross was drooling while Brady just stared into space.
"Yessir, officers. may boys done left me for the big city. After all I done for them, they just up and left their poor ole maw all alone. Jethro and Cletus always was worthless. Won't make much difference. These boys here are my sister Jessie's boys, Festus and Rufus. They ain't too bright. Festus got kicked in the head by a mule and Rufus got that thing where letter go all crazy on you. Can't read so told here I'd take care of them so long as they help me around the place. They like it here pretty good. Don't you boys?"
Ross tried to cry for help but it just made him drool even more and look even crazier. Brady was able to get our a word or two but they didn't make much sense. He was trying to ask for help but it just sounded like a moan.
"I know you're happy Rufus. Don't fret."
"OK Daisy. We may need to talk to your boys about a car jacking but meanwhile, if you see or hear anything about two boys gone missing just let us know."
Ross and Brady moaned as they watched the officers hike back up the train. They never should have tried a shortcut out of the woods and even more they never should have knocked on the door of the cabin and finally, no matter how hungry they were, they never should have stayed for dinner.
The officer in charge shrugged his head as they hiked back to their car.
"Those inbred hillbillies!" he muttered to his partner. "It's a wonder they can still function."
Daisy watched the officer and then turned to the boys.
"You boys are the answer to my prayers." she told them. "My two worthless sons just left me. You two look strong enough to keep things running out here. Soon as that dandelion potion gets fully working you won't remember much about who you are. Festus looks like the stronger of the two so you can be my outside man. I need lots of wood chopped for the winter, the roof needs mending to get you started. Rufus, you can help me in the house with the cooking, cleaning and tending the garden. Now drink down this potion."
Daisy forced a large dose of dandelion potion down the throats of each boy and soon they were unconscious. Daisy spent a few minutes with each reinforcing her story about who they were. They would sleep for several hours and awake ready for their new lives... and dinner.
