Dive into the Alcove

by: Jack Torrance Author IconMail Icon
Jame's slid into the alcove, sliding down the wall into a crouching position. He knew that the CAR would cut through anything that he encountered, but his orders came back to him, echoing in his mind. Minimum casualties if possible.

Thud thud thud, the booming footsteps were growing louder now and the emergency lights in his corridor were beggining to grow dimmer.

Thud thUD THUD! Suddenly the footsteps stopped and he could hear a deep rhaspy breathing coming from the direction of the intersection. He readied the CAR in front of him and stole a glance around the corner of the alcove, what he saw made his breath leave him in a sudden whoosh.

Standing at the end of the hall was a creature, no a beast. It was maybe seven feet tall, and under the dim glow of the red lights he could see that it had its head raised to the ceiling, and it was sniffing. The beast had a human form, but seemed to be grotesquely disfigured. Its entire body was coated with some kind of ooze, and under the red light Jame's couldn't tell what color that ooze was, in his heart though he knew it was red. Blood, the beast was covered in blood and from the bits of flesh hanging from the creature's teeth he doubted that the blood was its own.

The left hand of the beast dangled at its side, and Jame's could see that halfway up the forearm of the thing that the flesh there had been ripped all the way through, and that the bone had been shattered leaving it to hang by a small scrap of flesh. As if the beast could hear his thoughts it reached down and grabbed its own wrist with its right hand and pulled it slowly away. James could hear the flesh ripping, and choked back the urge to vomit as it fell away with a wet smacking sound.

The beast dropped its head and looked in Jame's direction and for the second time he fought back that vomiting urge, the creature had no eyes, just two empty black sockets. It let out a guttaral growl in Jame's direction and chunked the hand down the corridor towards him, it hit the floor beside the little alcove with a sloppy smack and Jame's watched as the fingers writhed against the ground, seeming to reach for him.

Jame's closed his eyes and slid back up the wall, he still had confidence in the CAR but it was lessened now. He took three deep breaths and then he...
