"I'm not going back!" with a high raspy voice, the boy screamed, fighting James. "Not again! Not again! Not again!"
"Easy now!" barely handling the hysterical child, James shouted. "I'm Sergeant James Anderson, leader of ECHO team!"
Slowly, uncertainly, the boy stopped struggling and looked at James with tears flowing from his deep, socket like eyes. "You- You are not The Others?" trembling, he asked. "You are- are not here to- to drag me back?"
"I am here to stop the monsters who made this place." breathing heavily, James said. "Who are the others?"
"S-Scary people." crying the boy said. "They came from the big doors. Men with horns, walking bones...."
James tilted his head slightly, asking, "The big doors?"
The boy nodded. "Down there, behind the statue the cloaked people prayed to." pointing down, the boy said. "The doors opened and they came out, dragging everyone in." he buried his rotted face into his putrid colored hands, sobbing as he added, "I- I got away but- but it hurt... it hurt, it hurt, it hurt...."
James sighed, watching the small, traumatized child rocking himself back and forth, sobbing. "I can't imagine the hell you must have gone through." softly, he said. "Stay with me and I will keep you safe."
Trembling, the boy turned to James with a tiny glimmer of hope in his eyes. "You- You promise?" looking at James, he asked. "You w-will keep me sa-safe?"
Ignoring the foul smell of the child, James pulled him into a warm hug. "I promise."
The boy cried onto James' shoulder as he gently picked him up. "Do you have a name?" looking around, he asked.
"Cory." his crying subsiding, the boy said. "Cory Jones."
"Well, Cory Jones, I need to find out if there are any other survivors in here." quietly, James said. "Do you think you can help me with that?"
Cory nodded. "I-I'll try."
