Chapter #3
Kiria
by: Unknown
"Kiria! Come back!" I shouted sternly at my hawk. The bird hovered and then made a diving swoop and landed neatly on my gloved hand. I held the strings of his feet tightly and stroked the bird's head. "Well done Kiria, well done, what have you got for me?"
The bird tried to raise it's leg but it couldn't, it was tied to a piece of leather held firmly in my fist. I understood what he wanted me to do immediately and took a small piece of paper from around his leg. I unravelled the paper and read:
"Kane, we need a knight, and quickly. Get any of your stable boys reaady, anyone from the village, we need one as soon as possible. Make him fast, light and agile, there is no need for him to be an excellent fighter. I hope your bird flies faster than a pigeon!"
I looked up at Kiria. "Kiria, my bird, fly again, and find me a child to be a knight. When you have found him come back to me and lead me to him. We must find him before the day is over."
Watching the bird fly away again was heartwrenching, I never knew if he would come back or not, because he was a wild beast, not a homing pigeon. I prayed that he would return to me, and demonstrate his intelligence once more by finding me the perfect boy for the job...
