Kess suppressed a grimace of irritation as he filled out a page in a notebook. "So, this guy didn't show any Thieves' Guild badge as he robbed you?"
"He didn't," said a woman. "He brandished a knife, threatened to cut me if I didn't give him the money, and he jumped out the window after I gave it to him." She looked at the empty drawer. "I hope that I don't get into trouble with the Head Seamstress."
Kess forced a smile to his face, as he felt another irritation. "I doubt that you will. He was going to harm you if you didn't do as he said. I'm sure that your Head Mistress will understand."
"Are you alright?" the woman asked. "Looks like you're in a bit of pain."
"Roughly the same amount you'd feel after stubbing your toe," said Kess. "Seems our unlicensed thief's knife isn't as sharp as he likes, especially given the fact that I'm wearing mail armor down in that area. Still, give him some credit, he is trying to use a bit of force behind each blow, in an attempt to escape. One moment."
"Sure thing," the woman said.
Kess pulled his upper body out of the window he'd been looking through, and looked down at his lower body, where he had a man wrapped up in a couple of coils, pinning their legs together, along with one of the man's arms to their body. The other arm had a knife in its hand, and the unlicensed thief was trying to use it to stab Kess.
"Buddy, unless you wish for a Healer to treat you for more than just that broken leg from when you jumped out of the window, please quit with the stabbings," Kess said. "I can keep this up much longer than you can, and I can apply more than enough force to break your back, arm, and legs." To demonstrate his point, Kess tightened his coils just enough to cause pain to the unlicensed thief, causing them to scream. "Drop it." Reluctantly, the unlicensed thief let go of the knife. "Thank you."
Kess then went back into the window with his upper body. "Sorry about that. I think he got the message though."
"It was good that you were passing by when you were," said the woman.
"Yes," said Kess. "The Thieves' Guild would have loved to have used him an an example, and break every bone in his body, to show unlicensed thieves why stealing without a license is a bad idea. At least this way, he'll get healed up, and only have to do a few years hard labor, unless he has something else to stand for." He got out his notebook again. "By the way, for the Record, what is your name?"
"Rose H. Thorns," the woman said.
"Alright," said Kess, as he put the notebook away. "I will send for you if you are needed."
"Maybe you'll come by when you are off the clock," said Rose. "There's some things about your sort I'm curious about."
"Such as?"
"Just how good are you with those coils of yours?" said Rose.
Kess grinned in understanding. "I see. We'll have to find out later. But first, I'd better drop off my prisoner." indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
