You watched the girls curiously as the cards are counted and Amanda came out the winner. She held up the card and smiled. Erica, right beside her, beamed.
"I win!" Amanda said. Erica tugged at her sleeve and began whispering in her ear. Amanda listened intently, nodding.
"Hey, now fair, that's probably cheating," Jamie said.
"Actually, I think you can form alliances and, ah . . . " you start to say, but trail off as your friends glare at you. You might be hosting this game night, but this has clearly taken a turn away from good clean fun, and even your interests. You were confused by this. After all, it's not like this game was real, right? And yet, the girls just seemed to accept that it was without question. You knew they could be competitive, but the looks in their eyes showed they were out for blood.
Except Samantha. She looked like she was more aware of what was happening than you, but more curious than intense.
"So I can swap any two players' attributes," Amanda said as Erica let her go. "And I . . . choose . . . " she looked around, an evil gleam in her eyes. She loved it when Erica plotted, and she loved it even more on those rare occasions when said plotting could make things a little interesting. Taylor could see what was happening, even if the others were left in the dark. She knew Amanda was Erica's stooge, and that Erica's biggest issue now was that she had been gaining weight steadily. Her change from flattering clothing to a suddenly love of bulky hoodies showed how self-conscious she was about it. So Taylor surmised that she would ask Amanda to swap now flabby part of Erica's with one of the other girls' thinner parts. Since Jamie was putting on weight, too, that meant Taylor or Samantha were going to get the short end of this straw.
On the other hand, and this idea made Taylor even more nervous, Erica and Amanda might be planning further ahead. If that's the case, they might want to knock out the smartest, most organized person in the group--her. The best way to do that, she knew, would be to swap her brain--or her intelligence, at least--with Samantha. That would put Samantha on her side, and leave her too ditzy to think straight.
You, of course, had no idea that any of this was going on behind the scenes right in front of you. All you saw were your best friends sitting a circle, ignoring you, all staring at each other like a bunch of squinting, plotting, attractive Clint Eastwoods.
What does Amanda/Erica do?
