When you felt the animal nudge your back, you panicked. You hadn't heard anything behind you. So, with nothing to defend yourself, you started running. It was only after you had started running that you looked behind you. You see nothing there, so you decide to stop.
But you make that decision a fraction of a second too late, as is clearly evident by your foot suddenly not hitting anything as you take a step.
Before you can react, you are already too far away from the edge to do anything, and as you look down, you realize there is no hope to survive this fall.
Your death was quick and painless, since you landed on your head, and your neck broke upon impact.
