“However you did it, I want to know how to nitrous drift and to hold it like you managed to.”
“I first learnt to hold a nitrous drift when I was in Angel City. I was enrolled into a show off event by a crew called the Wildcats and one of the skills was a nitrous drift.”
“Every drifter back home wants to know how you slid your Chaser with nitrous. Tell me your secret.”
“OK, in order to start the drift, your foot needs to be firm on the throttle, next, drift the car, but instead of having your foot on the throttle when you’re sliding, inject nitrous into the engine first and then feather the throttle, thus controlling the drift and making sure that the car remains side wards but expect to be further sideways when in the drift.”
“What do you do when you inject nitrous into the engine when in a drift, do you keep the wheel straight, what do you do?”
A couple of minutes later, Paolo answers, “you can have the wheel sideways when in the drift because the combustion happens when the switch has been activated on the wheel. The switch is linked by infra-red signals to the on board computer.”
“So what you are telling me is that you can nitrous drift without losing control of the wheel.”
“Yeah” replies Paolo.
Keiichi thanks Paolo and leaves. “Wait,” said Paolo. Keiichi turns around and says to Paolo, “what do you want to know?”
“I want to know if you’d be involved in some of the drift events, because some require more than one driver.”
“I’d love to be involved.”
“Great! The next race is in a couple of days, all I have to do is get you signed up with my ‘manager’, Mia Townsend.”
“Mia, eh? Lovely name.”
“I also have a picture of her if you want to see what she looks like.”
Paolo shows Keiichi his photo of Mia and Keiichi says under his breath, “lovely name for a lovely girl.”
Finally, Paolo leaves the event, with “Prepare for War” playing. Just as he got out of the car park, the police are on his tail, again, but this time, they were not after him. Suddenly, Cross pulls along side Paolo and winds down his window, “you wouldn’t happen to know what happened over in Camden Beach, would you, because we have had reports of a drift race taking place.”
“Sorry Cross, all I know is that I had gone into the car park because I was picking up something from a friend of mine.”
“What was the item?”
“A new ///ALPINE amp for my car.”
“I hear you have Prepare for War playing then.”
Suddenly it finishes and Nightrage starts playing.
“Nightrage, Frozen. Amazing song. What nationality is the band?”
“I think that they are Greek/Swedish melodic death metallers.”
“Nice.”
“Alright, I will leave you to your business.”
Cross leaves and then so does Paolo. Next minute, Paolo receives a call from one of the EDC guys. “Paolo, you need to get to casualty as soon as possible.”
“Why?”
“Keiichi has had a heart attack.”
Paolo phones Cross. “Cross, listen I need a favour, I need to get to casualty quickly.”
“Not a problem. What’s the matter?”
“My friend Keiichi Tsuchiya has just had a heart attack.”
“Alright, follow me and you’ll be there in no time.”
“Thanks Cross.”
“No problem.”
Cross speeds off and Paolo follows, by the time they reach the Accident and Emergency department, one of the EDC guys comes out off the ward with his head bowed. Paolo knows something is wrong and he asks the EDC guy, “He’s dead, isn’t he?”
“Afraid so.”
Cross now feels sympathetic and has his head bowed as a sign of respect. Keiichi’s wife comes out in tears. Paolo calls Mia. “Mia, a friend of mine has just died and I have his wife with me, do you mind coming to pick her up and take her to the safe house?”
“Sure, not a problem, where are you?”
“I’m at the Rosewood City Hospital.”
“Alright, escort her out and I’ll take her to the safe house.”
“Thanks Mia, you’re a star.”
Mia arrives and takes Keiichi’s wife, Aiko, to Paolo’s safe house.
Meanwhile, Paolo goes back inside to where Keiichi lay and started talking to both of the EDC guys when suddenly, guys from the Le Mans 24 Hours series and the D1 guys came into the room and bowed their heads when they saw Keiichi was finally at peace with the world.
One of the D1 guys asks Paolo discreetly, “do you know what Keiichi died of?”
“Yes, it was a sudden heart attack.”
“He taught us all about drifting, and now he’s gone, what else is there to learn about drifting?
“Paolo has one thing to teach you guys about drifting, tell them Paolo.”
“Fine, it’s called a Nitrous Drift.”
“But that’s strictly not allowed. Nitrous is dangerous if it caught on fire.”
“Trust me, I know how to pull off a nitrous drift and still keep all four wheels on the floor.”
“Fine, if you think you can do a nitrous drift, show us.”
Paolo jumps in his car and heads off to the hospital roundabout. He slides the car with ease and then hits the boost. When the boost reaches maximum psi, Paolo hits the nitrous control in the Chaser.
