Chapter #5

Bravery is stupid.

by: Peter the Great Author IconMail Icon
You consider turning around and walking away. Really. You do. This girl, this "sister", can clearly kick your ass without physical or mental reservation, and if you don't want to get hurt, it would be the smart thing to do. You can't bring yourself to do it, though- all those years of society's messages, of sticking up for what needs to be upheld... where were they? Someone had to do something...

But the beating... you look at the group of boys with bruises and bleeds that look REALLY serious and painful. They don't say a word, they just groan miserably... maybe you should retreat...

Caught in this little tug of war between ideals and safety, you are suddenly shaken out of it when you recognize two men in the group.

The first is your friend, Sam, who you've partnered with for years. He's on the ground and got a nasty bend in his leg. The second is your brother, Ali, whose glasses are gone and who is stumbling in circles with a bleeding mouth and nose.

If there was ever any value to those stupid ethics, you know what you should do. And really... who wants to live forever?

Sarah is rearing back her fist for another punch when you rush from behind and wrap your arms around her legs. She lets out a confused "What the..." as you yell to the others "RUN! HURRY!"

You can't imagine what your sister's face is like at this moment, but it must be really bad, because you can hear them scampering faster than you ever thought boys in their condition could.

For a second, time stands still. You stand there in a ridiculous wrap around her legs, no idea what's going to happen next. Then, slowly, slowly, she bends down, easily pulls your arms off from around her thighs, and pulls you with one arm in front of her. You can't move. Your legs are shaking. You're completely paralyzed with fear.

She looks down at you with an expression that could freeze a volcano. Then she reaches under your armpits, grabs you with both hands (none too tightly,) and lifts you up to her eye-level.

It's then that the falling feeling kicks in. You think for a second you've been dropped, but you realize that she's still holding onto you. It's only as the hands which clench you shift and the ground goes further and further away that you realize what's happening: you're shrinking.

In less than half a minute, each of her hands are as wide as your torso, and still growing. You have completely lost all feeling below the waist as her silently furious expression starts rising above you, higher, and higher, and higher...

Your legs no longer extend below her fingers, so she shifts you a bit more to grab you in one hand and place you in the other. Then she keeps on shrinking you. Her palm extends outward, constantly, and you wonder if she's ever going to stop...

She does. You sit in her palm like a massive beige, ridge-covered parking lot. You collapse on the "ground" that is her skin, never breaking your stare with her gigantic face. To you, it's now hundreds of feet wide, and every single square inch reads the same message.

Her message comes out in a low voice, but still loud for you. "GIVE ME ONE REASON I SHOULDN'T KILL YOU RIGHT NOW, YOU LITTLE BUG."

You can't say a word, but you're pretty certain at this point that you've wet yourself.

The silence remains between you two for ages, then you're aware of a voice sounding in the distance a message you can't make out. "COMING!" Your sister bellows, blowing out your eardrums.

She looks at you again for another few seconds, then suddenly the world tips...

As you roll to the edge of the palm, you have just enough time to realize you're being dumped before you're in the air a relative thousand feet above the ground.

If you're mind weren't in a state of complete panic, you would've thought how strange it was. You never could have guessed your final sights before the end would be a gigantic living creature representing the sister you don't have in the world you don't belong.

Her face is impassive as it pulls away...
