Grandma gave you a kind smile then glanced at the book, still in your hands, and gave you a slightly concerned look before quickly hiding it, still smiling. "Hello, Mat." she said, kindly. "How was school?"
"It was okay, grandma." you said, trying to sound natural. "You know, hitting the books, chatting with friends..."
"I can see you're hitting the books." said Natalie. "But, something tells me that you didn't get that book from school." she smiled patiently, wondering how you were going to react. "Where did you get that book?"
You began to panic as you knew uncle John did not want you to tell grandma that he gave you the book, at least not until your thirteenth birthday, and made it vanish while she was looking you in the eye. "Um... what book, grandma?" you asked, looking innocent.
Natalie giggled on the inside. "Nice try, Mat." she thought. she then caused the book to reappear in your hands, forcing a short scream to escape your lips. "That book." she said.
"Oh, this book." you said, giving a low nervous laugh.
Natalie smiled, she had seen all of the tricks and had heard all of the excuses. She had expected you to quickly replace your chaotic science book with some science fiction novel but you surprised her when you replied, "I found it under the seat cushion?"
"The seat cushion, you say?" asked Natalie, hiding her amusement. "That is a silly place to put a book, who do you think it belongs to?"
You felt trapped, you did not want to give up your book, you had learned so much in such a short time. Still, you did not want to get anyone in trouble, especially not your uncle John. "What am I going to do!?" you thought.
"Mat?" asked Natalie, looking more concerned. "Are you okay? You look a little pale."
What do you do?
