As Kristofferson looked at his cousin, he was relieved to see that Ash was still standing in front of the tree, not having touched it yet.
"What was that?" Ash asked, turning back to Kristofferson, his fur standing on end.
"I don't know," Kristofferson said, "but it can't be good. It was a mistake coming here. We should leave immediately."
Ash looked back at the fruit tree with a hint of longing in his eye, but then nodded and walked back over to Kristofferson. "You're right," he said. "Let's get out of here."
Ash made his way through the crack in the brick wall, having to hold his breath as he passed through. Having made it, he stood up. "Kristofferson?" he called out. "Are you coming?"
"Yeah, just a second," his cousin answered. Ash wasn't sure what he was doing; he tried to peek through the crack but couldn't make out the silver-furred fox, only the light glow of the tree. Finally, though, Kristofferson put his leg through the crack and began squeezing through.
"Is everything okay?" Ash asked, concerned.
"Yeah," Kristofferson said, quickly looking away. "C'mon, let's go home."
As Ash watched the taller fox scamper off to the ladder at the end of the pipe, he noticed that his pockets appeared to be bulging slightly. He scrunched his muzzle up and tried to see if he could detect any unusual smells coming from Kristofferson's direction, but nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. The two foxes climbed up the ladder and headed back to the tree, just in time for dinner.
That night, Ash climbed into his lofted bed, while Kristofferson rolled out his bedroll in the space underneath, since Ash had cleared out all his junk from there after becoming friends with Kristofferson. When Ash flicked off the light switch, he could swear he saw something glowing coming from underneath his bed where Kristofferson was sleeping. He looked over the edge, seeing Kristofferson curled up tight in his bedroll, the glowing light having vanished.
"Everything okay up there?" Kristofferson asked with a slight smile on his muzzle.
"Uhh…." Ash paused, then replied, "yeah, everything's fine. Good night, Kristofferson."
"Good night, Ash," Kristofferson said, closing his eyes.
Ash leaned back on his bed. I guess my eyes were playing tricks on me, he thought to himself, as he drifted off to sleep.
