The trip to the mall however, was, admittedly, much more embarrassing for Phillip than the doctor's had been; having to trundle round various "larger boys" clothing stores with his mother, trying on shirts and pants that seemed more like something he'd go camping in rather than actual clothes. And as bad as that had been, to top it all off, he was also (much to his protest) dragged into the very same maternity store that she'd gotten her own pregnancy outfits from, adding to the already mounting humiliation.
"Don't worry, we just need to get you a few proper maternity things that's all, something that will fit your new belly better than those oversized shirts," she'd told him as he reluctantly walked in, immediately grabbing various dresses and things and holding them up against him to see if they would fit, causing Phillip's face to turn crimson. While he may not have been the only male currently in the store browsing for clothing, he was by far the youngest, and the thought of having to wear women's clothing wasn't something he was particularly keen on, nor was the attention he seemed to be getting from the ladies behind the desk, who began cooing and fawning all over him after his mum had revealed that he would be carrying her baby for her; phrases like "Aww, how cute", and "such a thoughtful young man," being bandied about as they all rushed to his assistance.
"Crap, I bet it's going to be like this all the time when I become pregnant," he thought to himself as one of the older ladies began rambling on at him about how her nephew had helped one of her cousins carry her baby a few years ago, his mother having left him to get a few items of her own ("something special for tonight" to be exact).
After thankfully managing to survive the onslaught of broody, middle aged women, about hour or so later they were back at home, shopping bags in hand (well mostly in Phillips hand, not wanting his mum carrying a lot of weight in her condition). "You know soon you'll be the one with all this extra weight on you and I'll be carrying the bags," his mother joked as they made their way into the kitchen, adding with a smile, "Though you won't be an invalid quite yet, it's the final month that's the hardest. After about a year of carrying you I was so big I could barely even stand!"
"Gee, well that certainly something to look forward to then," Phillip sarcastically sighed, thinking his mother's bump was big enough as it was, and not particularly liking the thought of being unable to move.
"Ah, the travellers return!" his father then said, stepping into the kitchen to greet them as Phillip dropped the various shopping bags to the floor, "So, how was the shopping trip?"
"Don't ask," Phillip replied with a shake of his head, heading to the fridge to get himself a drink. Bill simply chuckled at this, well aware of what his wife was like when it came to buying clothes (and presumably enjoying the fact that she got to buy girly clothing for her son for a change), having had to go through the same thing himself many a time. Karen, however, just scoffed, giving her son a playful whack on the arm and telling her husband that, "It was fine, don't listen to grumpy boots here. Plus Doctor Jessop said that everything is perfectly fine for the transfer, so we can go ahead with it tonight if we want."
"Great, that's excellent news!" Bill smiled, clearly enthused, giving his wife a hug and turning back over at Phillip, "That means you'll have all Sunday to get used to carrying your sister, bud, before your mother goes back to work."
Admittedly Phillip was slightly relieved by this news, as much as his mum and Doctor Jessop had prepared him, it was still comforting to know that she'd be there to help him through the first day, before he himself had to go back to school pregnant, imagining some of the reactions he would get from his friends. He then pondered for a minute if he should call any of them, give them some forewarning so that it wasn't a total surprise come Monday, but figured that he'd at least be better off waiting till after the transfer was over (figuring the anticipation of that was bad enough as it was without the added taunts and jokes of his friends on top).
"Guess I'll go put this stuff up in my room then," he then said to his parents, after finishing off his drink and picking the bags back up off the floor, adding with a mumble, "If I can find anywhere to put it that is..."
"Okay, sweetheart, I'll get lunch started in a bit," his mother said with a smile as he trudged out of the kitchen and into the hall, overhearing a little of his parents discussion as he slowly made his way up the stairs.
"I was thinking that maybe tonight you could make yourself scarce for a while, so me and Phillip can be alone, you know, for the transfer."
"Oh yeah, sure, no problem, I'll give Dave a call or something, see what he's up to."
"Thanks honey, I just want to make sure he's as relaxed as possible, seeing as it's his first time."
"Don't worry, I understand," his father's voice then chuckled, "I wouldn't want my dad hanging around either," sounding just as relaxed and easy going as ever, even at the prospect of his wife and son sleeping together.
