It happened on a cold winter's night when everyone was asleep or inside, away from the bare night sky. They didn't see the bright light, the twirling sounds. They only lasted a minute, however, and then they were gone. No one would ever see them, or speak of them, but their effects would be felt on the village for a very, very long time.
Two months later...
"Ugg...."
Sakura awoke sick and nauseous. She could have thrown up, but could hear that her mother had already beaten her to the bathroom, at least judging by the sounds. They had both been ill for the past week, though at first it had just seemed like a typical stomach bug. Now, Sakura wasn't so sure.
"Sakura?" she heard her father call from the hall. "Are you feeling better?"
He opened the door to her room, and Sakura couldn't blame him for the worried look he gave her.
"I'm fine, dad," she said. She sat up slowly as to not disturb her stomach. "How's mom?"
"Your mother has been in the bathroom all morning."
"Dad, I'm sure it's just a stomach bug."
"I talked to Mr. San across the street. His wife and daughters have been sick all week too. I think it's time we go to the hospital."
"Dad, please. See, it's just a bug-"
"Then why are just you girls getting sick? We're going to the hospital, Sakura."
