Chapter #5

Elaine's Story.

    by: JNJay Author IconMail Icon
Elaine Wilson wearily unlocked the door to her apartment. The 32 year old woman entered the living room, put down her briefcase and collapsed on the couch. It was the worst ... correction, second worst day of her life. She had officially lost her job. It was not entirely unexpected; rumors of layoffs at the company had been brewing for months.

Elaine lied on the couch for about half an hour before getting up and went to the telephone. She promised to tell her mother what happened. She dialed the number, and after a few rings a familiar voice asked, “Hello.”

“It’s me, Mom” Elaine said, getting to the point. “I got laid off today”

“I’m sorry, dear” Elaine’s mother Abagail replied. “What are you going to do?”

“Well, I guess I’ll try to get another job.”

“You would not be in the situation if you were married”

Elaine sighed. She knew her mother would say that. “Don’t start that again.”

“Why don’t you call that Mr. Rolan? He’s still available.”

“He cheated on me, Mother. Twice, at least” Elaine almost shouted. “There’s no way I’m going to marry a three-timer.”

“So what” Abagail said. “You father cheated on me more times I can count, but he took good care of us. These days you can’t count on yourself. You need a man.”

Elaine was impatient to end the conversation. “Look, Mother, I have to go back to the office and collect my stuff. I’ll see you as soon as I can. Bye”

As Elaine hung up, she went back to the sofa and sat down. Her thoughts turned to Andrew Rulf, her former fiancé. It had been almost three years since she broke off the engagement due to his numerous infidelities. She had a handful of dates since then, but nothing serious. She knew that if she wanted to have a family, it would have to be soon.

As she pondered her future, she heard a knock on the door. She slowly got up and opened the door. It was a forty-something man in a business suit, holding a package. “Excuse me,” he politely asked, “are you Ms. Elaine Wilson?”

“Yes” Elaine responded. “What is this about?”

“I represent the estate of the late Winifred Desinski” he said. Elaine recognized the name of her great aunt Winifred who died last year. “She gave instructions in her will that this package be personally delivered to you.” The man handed the package to her.

“What’s in it?” Elaine asked.

“I’m sorry, Ms. Wilson, I do not know its contents” The attorney then gave Elaine a form for her to sign. “There’s one more thing” he continued as Elaine signed the confirmation document, “the package also contains a letter from Mrs. Desinski. She requested that you read the letter as soon as possible. Good day, Ms. Wilson.”

Elaine watched as the man walked away from her. She looked at the package he gave her; it was covered in plain brown paper. She returned to the living room and stared at it for about ten minutes before she opened it. Removing the paper, she opened the black box which contained a smaller white box and an envelope. She opened the white box and her eyes widened when she saw an amulet with a beautiful blue gemstone. She took the amulet in one hand and the letter in another, wondering what to do.

After considering, she ...
