This choice: The Meeting goes well, He's happy with your work • Go Back...Chapter #5The Meeting goes well, He's happy with your... by: Mr. George   "You're adjusting well to your work." Dr. Hammond said, as he drank his coffee. You sit opposite, pleased with the news. Hands crossed delictately in your lap. You try to hide your joy at this outcome.
"You've adjusted to the new gender."
You nod.
"Your new position, with it's loss of prestige."
You nod again, trying to hide the frown. That adjustment was harder. To be overlooked, and dismissed was hard. But, you were hard-working and diligent... It's own reward you told yourself. Besides, as a secretary, you had fewer responsibilities, fewer hassles. You could simply leave at the end of the day, and shake off the stress with your work clothes.
Realising you've tuned out the doctor, you focus once more on his words.
"So, we're advancing you to phase 2."
Frowning you answer, "Phase 2." It's hard to hide your distraction. But, he smiles indulgently.
"You're just too good." He confessed with a shrug, "We need to give you more obstacles to overcome. So we can get the data the experiment requires."
A chill settles in your stomach. All the praise and good news now taking on a darker tone.
"So..."
"Think of it as praise." He answered, "You've passed level one, and ready for level two." Even his smile was stiff and awkward. He started nodding hoping you'd copy the gesture.
"So... What sort of difficulties?" you ask. Your voice getting harsher, more insistent.
"Well, we need you to be dismissed more. We need a reason for people to dismiss you."
You shrug in confusion.
"You're already a woman, so..."
Horrifyingly he mimes your bust growing and growing. His hands stretching further and further in front of him.
You shake your head 'No.' You didn't sign up for this.
Just as firmly, Dr. Hammond nods 'Yes.'
"But that's not all." He tells you. "You're too good."
Your defences go up, but he continues talking. He shows you a projection of your new body, a simulation of your future form.
