It was only a few minutes down the road before your companion had returned. He was back next to you without a word, and as you walked, the silence was starting to wear at you. You couldn't help but get a little nervous as you spoke, before turning, walking backwards and trying to figure out how to express what you wanted to say.
"Did you see that?" You took your fingers and pointed a couple of them at your eyes, before indicating the road he had traveled. He gave you a confused expression, shrugging his shoulders when he couldn't figure it out. "Never mind, then... I'll have to ask later." You sighed and shook your head as you re-packed your things.
The rest of the day went by uneventfully. It was simply a full day of travels, and while you walked, he followed. If there was any sign of anybody else, he would vanish within seconds, but he would always reappear after they were out of sight. You weren't really sure what he was planning on once you had reached the city, or if he had even thought about where you had lived. You had to try to get the point across somehow, before it was too late.
__________
The chance came in the evening, after you had already set up a fire and found a few fruits to eat. You had offered some to him, and though he didn't have the same reaction as on the road, he seemed grateful when he accepted them. He seemed to move towards a tree again when he finished, but you lightly held against his shoulder to try to stop him.
"Hang on a moment... I want to discuss something with you. Well, sort of." He looked at you in confusion, but paused and held in place when you let go of him.
You looked around before picking up a fallen branch, trying to draw something in the dirt. While you weren't exactly the most skilled, it didn't take too much for you to end up drawing a lot of buildings together.
"I'm heading to the city right now." You tried to prod the image as you spoke, repeating yourself as he looked at the image. "I know you wanted to come with me, but I don't think we can get you inside very easily." He looked at the image in confusion for a moment, before giving a clear nod. He quickly dug one of his talons into the dirt nearby, easily scratching out a few trees, trying to indicate something at you.
"Um.... I think so? There's a small bit of forest nearby, yes..." You draw an arrow between the two, doing your best to communicate it. He nodded, simply pointing at himself, then at the image he drew. "So, you'll just stay nearby, then... Okay, I guess that's something." He nodded, gave you another curious look, and quietly resumed climbing up into the tree. His talons gripped the trunk easily, and he pulled himself up within the minute. You had to wonder why he didn't simply fly up, but you just quietly prepped your bed, knowing you probably wouldn't get a response.
__________
By the time you had arrived back at Ganecia, things were a bit clearer. After all, when it had come into sight, the Krethid gave you a small pull. You only had to nod at him before he understood. He glanced around, looking for the woods that you had indicated before. Upon spotting them, you saw him make a dash towards the area.
"H-hey! Hang on!" You tried to follow, a little surprised by his speed. Except for the times you had met others on the road, he had always walked with you, and followed your pace. You had to be a bit impressed when he arrived, panting for breath and having a bit of trouble spotting him.
Even though you knew he hadn't gone very far in, it was still rough. He had left very few prints, and even though he wasn't done climbing, it was still difficult to make out his figure through the leaves and branches of the trees that obscured your sight. "Hey! You here?" he seemed to ignore you for a minute, heading to the top and just glancing around the area before descending again, carefully dropping through the branches before lightly landing on the ground. He gave you a swift nod, before scratching something into one of the higher branches of the tree.
"So, you're... marking that tree? Or claiming it? Something like that... You'll stay here, then?" You point at him, then at the tree. He gives a quiet nod, looking at you as you spoke. "Okay, then... I guess that'll cover things. I've got to head into town. I think I can turn in information regarding the slavers. I'll come back and bring a bit of food, okay?"
He only looked at you curiously, and you simply weren't sure what else you could say. You just tried to motion through, indicating yourself and the city nearby, before pointing to the ground afterwards. He nodded, and quietly moved back into the tree. You were about to turn away, when you heard a voice speaking, deep but quiet.
"Thanks."
You turned suddenly to try to look up at the creature, surprised by the sound of his voice. You had expected a chirp or a squawk like what you had heard earlier, but nothing like his voice, and certainly nothing in a language you could understand. "Y-you can speak?" He only looked at you with a slightly uncertain look, but you shook your head as you spoke. "Sorry... You probably don't know too many words... Erm... Something simple, then..." You just take a step closer, looking up right into your eyes. "My name is Fermik. What's yours?"
"Fermik?" He quietly looked at you, before nodding. "Name is Blit."
