Snatching up the paper, she read the date. 1st August 1880, there was a headline about 'Parliament', so Adam knew she had to be in Britain, probably London, at the height of empire.
Screwing her eyes shut, she struggled to focus on the words. The letters shifted and swam, all without losing sharpness. Then it struck, the words were meaningless. The letters as clear as ever but had no sound and only shape.
She struggled to accept it, but her new body was clearly illiterate... Educating certain women wasn't a priority, with their roles defined more by biology than anything.
Adam suspected it was before she could have a job, a vote, or even possess property without it being in a mans' name... a husband's name.
The idea was horrifying, she didn't even know whether she had a husband or not!?
Kicking angrily out at the chair, she was utterly lost. Worse Adam knew exactly what he expected when he saw a woman looking like she did. It was even worse to be that woman.
