Accounts differ on how things ended up this way. Humans might have been the result of a mad mage’s breeding experiments, appeared out of thin air, or traveled with the ponies from their ancient homeland. However, the commonly accepted explanation is that humans were native to Equestria. When the ponies came after fleeing the wendigoes, the humans’ Stone Age weapons were no match for steel and magic. As a result, the ponies subjugated the humans with minimal effort. Over time, humans were bred to be docile and obedient. The modern result is a creature that resembles a human, but behaves more like a loyal dog, and has a relatively simple mind incapable of performing calculus.
Ponies use humans as beasts of burden, but primarily as pets. They’re a bit more high-maintenance than most animals, but their intelligence lets them mostly take care of themselves. Humans are beloved and loyal companions who dutifully perform whatever chores their masters teach. When their masters feel down, they can offer comforting words on top of snuggles.
Naturally, all of this was a big shock to the human from another world. This out of towner’s abnormal intelligence is often ignored as ponies treat him or her like any other human, ignoring their pleas for freedom as some sort of game. As such, it was no surprise that shortly after arriving, our human was captured and sent to a pet store. At least humans aren’t cramped in cages, but given an open enclosure to roam around while magical barriers prevent escape. Humans are all naked, because animals don’t need clothes, and ponies seem to have a clothing-optional society, anyway.
Today, the pet shop is holding an adoption drive with sales on human food and care products. Several more buyers than usual have gathered around the enclosure, and it looks like today might be your ‘lucky’ day. You might be a companion to some lonely pony, a tool to teach a foal responsibility, maybe a work animal trained to do chores, or something worse. Anyway, it looks like somepony already has an eye on you. Who is it?
