This choice: She runs from the room but comes back. • Go Back...Chapter #4She runs from the room but comes back. by: kamper You heard a gasp as you slithered over to the spot and started coiling in the corner. The lights weren’t even on yet and while you could see more than clearly you knew that all she saw was a dark shadow on her floor and now in the corner of her room. As you got comfortable you rose you head only inches away so she could see the outline in the dark.
“Mom, how’s it going?” You asked nervously to her quivering form. She was definitely afraid of snakes and you being so big didn’t help matters.
She squeaked in response as she subconsciously backed up and fell off her bed. She then bolted from the room. You sighed as you counted your blessings, at least she didn’t scream and wake the others. You saw sensed her like before as she entered your room, looking for you, then at the door knob with your little bit of saliva still on it. She then went to the bathroom and shoved water in her face to make sure she wasn’t dreaming. To her horror she wasn’t and ran to the phone. You saw her lift it up to her ear then slowly put it down without dialing anything. She stood there with her hand to her mouth as she held back a host of shocked responses. She stood there for a while and you got tired so you let your head rest on your neatly piled coils. She hesitated back and forth but finally put down the phone and started back towards her room. She stopped before the threshold of her door then breathed in deep before coming back in and shutting the door and turning on the light. She gasped again and clung to the wall at the sight of you in the corner.
“Wow, that bad?” you asked and she just nodded. Her eyes shot to your head and mouth as you raised it to speak with her. “I don’t suppose it would help if I gave you a hug.” You tried to joke and it looked to work as her sealed lips burst with a half laugh before she covered it. “Please mom, I’m having enough trouble dealing with this without the whole panic thing. I promise not to bite you or anything like that.”
“Jake… I don’t know if I’ll be comfortable with this but… it is you right?” she asked to which you just nodded, very slowly. She hesitated then brought the chair that she had in her room and pushed it to a position near you but on the opposite corner of the wall, still away from the door. She looked ready to run again even after sitting in the chair. “Ok, I guess I’m going to have to get used to this eventually so…” she said then used the wheeled chair to scoot closer until she was right next to you. Staying deathly still, you watched her reach out her hand and touch your extended head. You, again, didn’t move at all as she explored your body with her hand. Your very limited tongue motion caught her attention but she got used to it.
“So… can I move?” you asked without moving your mouth to much as to frighten her… any more than she already was.
“Uh… yeah, just not that fast.” She instructed to which you lowered your head so it was in one of her hands as she put it under your head. “This isn’t that bad.”
“Thanks, I think. I’m glad you didn’t call anyone.” You said to which she stopped petting.
“How do you know I was going to?” she asked.
“Well first it was just a fear. I mean that’s what I would do if a 30 foot King Cobra was in my house. Also these new senses of mine are so accurate I could track you as you moved around in the house.” You answered.
“You could?”
“Yes, it really is pretty cool. It’s like seeing through walls and every scent has its own unique trait, like hair color or a visual finger print. I’m not really sure how everything works yet but minus the whole transforming thing it is an awesome experience. I can even hear Ashley and Trish’s heartbeat from here. I can smell that Ashley is hiding some chocolate in her dresser and Trish has a snake skin in her closet. I can see a rat moving under the house, in its hole and even a bird in its egg, ready to hatch.” You answered with a far off fascination.
“But you’re ok? Not hurting anywhere or in any pain?” she asked and you finally recognized the trait of her motherly concern she usually had when asking such questions.
“A little scared actually. I mean it is pretty cool an all but now what. I can’t go to school like this. I don’t know what I can eat or what other activities I should do to keep healthy. On top of that, from the research I’ve done over my schooling, I know that King Cobras are lucky to make it to 16 feet and the record is a little over 18. I am clearly longer and bigger than that. So anyone that comes over to look at me might try to take me away. But I don’t really see a choice in it. I don’t even know how potent my venom is or if it is venom at all. If I accidentally bite someone or something I don’t know if we should call 911 or just wait for them to wake up. Otherwise I’m doing fine, just scared.” You said and as you repeated the last ‘scared’ part you felt her hand rub the back of your head. You expanded your hood a little, which made her stop for a second, then continued.
“I didn’t think you’d be scared to. But you know we could always call Aunt Colleen. She works at the zoo and knows all about animals. She practically owns the place. If there is anyone that can help with you like this than she can.” Your mom said as she thought and tried to comfort you. She was always a loving mother and knew just what to say, well usually. She was a little at a loss what to say to her son that just turned into a large poisonous snake. But under the circumstances and her own phobia she was doing rather well.
“What about Ashley and Trish?” you asked.
“Well, I think it would be best if they kept you company until I can get Auntie Colleen here. That way we can all get used to you. But I’ll talk with them beforehand. Why don’t you head down to your room and get some sleep. I’ll call her first thing in the morning and explain your situation to the girls at breakfast. Trish always wanted a snake.” She answered as she tried to sound cheerful but her body scent and heartbeat were still saying she was scared. However you didn’t want this to get any weirder so you took what she said instead of what her body was telling you.
“Ok mom. Thanks for not panicking. I think so extra rest will do me some good.” You said and she lifted her hand off of you and watched you slither away and toward the door. She suddenly realized that you needed the door open so she rushed over and did so. Your snake instincts were telling you that the rapidly closing legs were a threat but you suppressed the urge to strike at them and slithered to your room. She turned the heat up in your room and closed the door. She waved and smiled as she saw you settle on your bed for a nap.
