Eric was humming a tuneless song to himself as he strolled up the walkway to the front-door of his house. He was in a good mood, probably because it was weekend. Or maybe it had something to do with the small chest he was carrying. It's ornate woodwork was set with (presumably fake) emeralds and rubies, and judging by the way he carried it, it was pretty heavy. Natalie wondered what was in it, it seemed interesting.
He entered the kitchen and sat down at the table, something he rarely did when he came straight out of school. He put the box on the table and greeted Natalie.
"Hey Mom." He said, a strange grin was creeping on his face, one he was furiously trying to hide.
"Hey Eric, how was your day?" She said, getting a cup of tea for him while pouring herself a fresh one.
"It was OK. Just glad it's finally weekend." He said, stroking the box absent-minded.
She sat down, taking a sip of her tea. "What's in the box?"
"It looks awesome, doesn't it? I found it in a pile of rubble in an abandoned section of the school basement. Here, look..." He opened the chest and pulled out a crystal ball."...A real crystal ball."
Natalie stared into the ball, starting to feel faint. She couldn't make herself look away, though. There was something very enthralling about the swirls and wisps that seemed to be projected on the inside of the ball. She felt herself slipping away into a place of utter darkness, unaware of her surroundings.
A moment later, she awoke to the sound of Eric snapping his fingers. "Oh,excuse me, I wasn't paying attention. What were you saying?"
