"I know I've always said you can live your life however you want but are you sure about this?"
"Yes, mom," Harper said, rolling her eyes as she answered the question for what must have been the 50th time, "I don't have time for dance."
"You love to dance."
"Not anymore. I did when I was like 9, but now I have more important things to do."
"I just don't want you to get so caught up in your social life you forget how much you love it."
"Mom," Harper sighed, "I'm 15, just trust me."
"Okay," She relented, "but remember to get exercise some other way. You've always had a slow metabolism, and-"
"Mom, I'll be fine."
Harper kept playing through the conversation in her mind as she practically skipped down the sidewalk. The school year was over, and now she was free from dance class, so she could do whatever she wanted with her time, which meant it was time to celebrate.
A small bell chimed overhead as the door opened, and Harper stepped inside the small ice cream shop as a wave of cold air rushed out to greet her. The store was a small, white building with blue trim. There was a counter towards the front, and the shelves and tables circled it. The tables were painted white and had mint green seats on the metal chairs that surrounded them. A chubby teen girl was sitting on a crate looking at her phone as Harper walked in, though she quickly tucked it into her pocket and stood up with a smile.
"Hi, what can I get for you today? Do you want to try any samples?" the girl had a beautiful voice that made Harper think of wind chimes on a day with a slight breeze.
"Yeah, can I try the strawberry?" Harper asked, "That one looks delicious."
"Definitely!"
Harper continued looking at all the flavors as the girl went to grab a sample of the strawberry. Harper took the small spoon and quickly licked it clean as the girl smiled at her, "Do you want to try anything else."
"No, I think I know what I want," Harper said, returning the girl's smile, "Can I get a quadruple scoop sundae with extra chocolate sauce?"
"Absolutely!"
Harper watched as the girl quickly scooped extra chocolate sauce and poured it over the top of the sundae, then topped it with whipped cream and a cherry. The girl closed the plastic container and handed it to Harper, "That'll be $7.95, please."
"Sure," Harper said, digging into her pocket and pulling out some change.
A minute later, she plopped down at one of the tables and began to dig in, enjoying the taste as she let the bits fall onto her tongue and swallowed them with the small amount of melted ice cream. Harper kept shoveling the ice cream into her mouth, quickly emptying the container.
Since she'd turned 15, her mother had told her she was finally free to live her life how she wanted. She'd always had a sweet tooth, and now she got to enjoy treats like this as much as she wanted. However, that sundae had only whetted her appetite. Now she wanted more!
