The Culture - a fictional interstellar anarchic, socialist, and utopian society created by the Scottish writer Iain M. Banks. A post-scarcity, post-human society watched over by benevolent AIs - drones and the powerful Minds.
Although the Culture was originated by humanoid species, subsequent interactions with other civilizations have introduced many non-humanoid species into the Culture. Its citizens are free to change physical form and even species (though some stranger biological conversions are irreversible, and conversion from biological to artificial sentience is considered to be what is known as an Unusual Life Choice).
Accidental death is largely unknown within the Culture and its citizens are largely free of disease and old age. Conflict comes through the Culture's interations with non-culture civilizations, which are dealt with by the group known as Contact and the ntelligence organisation named Special Circumstances within it.
