Sam tried to resist but after a couple of shocks from their energy staffs, he boarded the ship. Once in position, a shimmering light formed around his feet. As the ship climbed back into the sky, Sam was sure he wasn't in Kansas anymore.
This had to be the grid. He'd never been sure whether his father was just making up stories, or genuinely believed the incredible stuff he used to tell Sam as a child.
Tentatively he tried shifting his weight from one foot to another... They remained firmly planted to the floor.
He wasn't sure where he was, but he was sure he was awake. What was worrying him was his fellow passengers/prisoners. Their emotions covered a broad range: terror; despair; panic. None were happy to be there.
When the ship, one of his neighbours had called it a 'recogniser'. Unloaded them, the pilot walked along the line tapping each on the shoulder one at a time when he passed.
"Deletion."
"Games."
"Reprogramming."
His neighbour was chanting a mantra under his breath, "not games, not games, not games." Perhaps the pilot heard his words, or not. But with a firm hand he grasped his shoulder.
"Games."
Screaming the man fled. He dived off the end of the platform choosing death over games. Sam was wondering how this could possibly be the dream his father had. A Utopia of freedom and equality. The stench of fear was in the air. The pilot even seemed unbothered by the man's suicide.
