This choice: ...someone interrupts you, having noticed the glowing rock. "What's that?" • Go Back...Chapter #3The Interrupter by: Unknown “What’s that?” asks a girl’s voice.
“Huh?” You look up. She’s a redhead, cute, but a bit overweight.
“That rock you’re holding. It’s glowing.”
You look down. “No, I think that’s the light in here.”
She squints through her glasses. “Are you sure?”
“I found it on the way here,” you say. “It’s just an ordinary rock, as far as I can tell.”
“So why’d you pick it up?” she demands. “And why are you holding it now?”
“Just nervous. Gives me something to focus on. I don’t know anyone here except --“ You turn and nod toward Jason, and see that the transformed brunette is pretty much draped all over him.
“Well, you know me now!” she exclaims. “I’m Amy. Can I see the rock for a sec?”
“Sure, whatever,” you say, hoping a quick look at the rock will get her to stop focusing on it -- besides, what are the odds she’ll make a wish?
You hand it to her. She rolls it around in her hand. “Huh, I swear it looks like it’s glowing,” she says. “Anyway, you haven’t told me your name.”
“Oh, yeah,” you say. “It’s --“
“No, wait, let me guess!” she insists. She squints at your face for a few seconds and then says, “Damon. Your name is Damon.”
“Whoa, that’s right!” you exclaim.
“Really?!” she asks. “I was just joking around. I’ve never been right before.”
“Yeah, hang on,” you say. You pull your wallet out of your back pocket and fish out your driver’s license. Oddly, the first name seems a bit blurry at first glance, but you blink and see that it’s clearly DAMON. You hold it up for her.
“Wow, cool,” she says, and then notices, “Hey, the rock’s not glowing anymore.”
“Must be because you’re in different light,” you suggest, and hold out your hand. You wonder if a wish really did cross her mind. Well, nothing seems obviously different.
She’s about to drop the rock into your hand when it starts glowing again. “Whoa, I don’t think it’s just the light,” she says.
“That is weird,” you agree. “You know, I actually work at the Smith Museum, so I can take it to one of the experts there on Monday --“
Amy is examining it more closely, putting it right up to an eye and squinting at it. “It almost seems like there are man-made symbols on this thing when you move it around. And with the glow -- there’s no black light in here, and this doesn’t seem radioactive -- only other place I’ve heard of rocks glowing is in stupid fantasy stories where they have faeries trapped in them, or they grant wishes or something. Ha, might as well test it out with something ridiculous. Let’s see, I wish...“ indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
