"Of course, I understand the motivation," Mat said smoothly. "Still, taking this position would give you some valuable exposure, face time with important people and a chance to watch sales agents in action, pick up on their skills. You might get ahead without taking a job like this, but doing this will shave a few years off your career path. Are you really sure that it's not something you could do?"
"It may be a short cut, but I'm okay with doing things the hard way. Now I think I should leave," she said, picking up her small purse and standing to go.
"Of course. And please," Mat said as he opened the door for her. "Don't feel that this will have any effect on other opportunities that come your way."
Once the door had shut, Mat allowed his frustration to boil over as he strode quickly to his desk, bringing up a set of files on some of the projects his managers were running. There was something that Tanya had been talking about, using magic to better align an employees nature with company needs... she could probably make things rough on Susan until she caved and took what Mat was offering.
And of course there were always Alan Summer's projects... the man had no shortage of things to use on an employee that could be life altering in the extreme. And Alan still owed Mat a favor for sending him the last two interns to use in his 'research.' Mat had made a point of not asking too much, but when he saw one of the two interns on her last day she'd gone from prissy bible thumping conservative to tattooed lesbian activist... and gained some two hundred pounds in the process.
Finally deciding he picked up the phone on his desk and called
