"So Julie", asked Jack as he got himself comfortable in Julie's palm, "tell me a bit about yourself. How did you get so big, and what's life like in this world? And while we're at it, how did this whole tradition get started and how did you get the lucky job of "guardian"?"
Julie sat down on the polished floor and explained " Jack, we aren't big. You're just small. Maybe its a result of the different laws of physics between our two dimensions. As for my life... well, there is not much to say. I was merely a servant in this palace before I was appointed your guardian.
The tradition of choosing a king began in the aftermath of a devastating war. A long time ago, we used to have men on this planet. But although our world advanced like yours in many ways, women's rights was not one of them. Our societies stayed extremely patriarchal well past the modern age, and became increasingly tyrannical against women. So women started organizing in secret.. making plans... and eventually, one night, we wiped out the entire leadership of the dominant male government in a surprise attack. But we overreached... and killed every male on the planet in our thirst for revenge.
But we didn't know what kind of rule we wanted, and so we women fought among ourselves for control. Without the males, we could not reproduce, and so our population started to fall sharply. After years of bloodshed, just when it all seemed lost, a figure... a goddess... appeared from the heavens and stopped our civil war. She made all of the survivors a deal: she would use her powers to restore our population number to before the war, advance our technology so that we could see other worlds, and give us eternal life and youth. In return, each year, we would have to pick a man from your world, Jack, to rule over us, and we would have to do whatever he said or else, as the Goddess warned, the disaster that almost destroyed us would return again with a vengeance. To educate the ruler, a guardian is randomly selected from a raffle holding all the names of the ladies on this planet. I was simply lucky."
Jack took a moment to let Julie's statements sink in. He then stood up and asked, "Julie, I want you to...
