"...noble. More than a noble in fact, this one was a king! A king in his native and barren land."
The noise of the crowd immediately rose into a crescendo of furious bidding. Imagine, not only the noteriety of being able to actually have bought from the Veru'Vada auction but to have bought royalty! To have a king wipe your arse if you so demanded it! It was too much for many to pass up! Scuffles broke out within the crowd as bids were cast and then instantly outbid. The price steadily climbed as the bidding raged on.
Then one voice rose above the others with what seemed like an impossible bid - a good twenty times the amount of the last one. The crowd grew quiet as people looked for the owner of that voice. It belonged to an older man adorned in the rich robes of a foreigner.
The barker barely lost a beat as he then challenged the crowd to top the foreigner's bid. "Surely there is one among you here that will not allow a foreigner to walk away with so rich a prize uncontested!" But there were none and the barker was forced to close the bidding with a booming, "Sold!"
The foreigner quietly walked up to the auction block and took the slave's collar chain in his hand and led his property off through the crowd. The barker immediately got the mob going again with his next item for sale, promising it to be even better than the last.
"Are you well my prince?" the foreigner asked his slave when they were clear of the crowd. "I can't imagine they would have treated you too awfully in the household of his almighty, the ruler of Riatin." He paused, "Were you successful?" He handed him a key.
"Yes," the slave answered, unlocking the collar with the key he'd been given. He smiled. "He called me 'king', though I am only a prince."
"But your son will be a king."
"Yes he will." The prince's smile broadened. "The queen of Riatin is pregnant"
