You wait for a few moments at the front door, but no one comes. Thinking that they may not have heard, you knock a bit louder than before. Still, no response. You're getting a bit worried now; your mother's car is clearly parked beside yours in the driveway, so you know she must be home. However, even banging on the door with all your might doesn't bring anyone out to greet you.
"I wonder where everyone is," you mutter to yourself. "I hope they're not hurt or anything..."
An idea pops into your head, and you try calling the home phone line from your cell phone. After dialing the number, you can hear the familiar ring of the family phone through the door. Then you hear it again. And again. A few rings later, the line goes to the answering machine.
"Hello," the chipper voice of your mom greets you. "This is Sarah, but I'm not available right now. Please leave your name and number after the beep and I'll get back to you as soon as I can..." The recording shifts to a more agitated pouty tone as it continues, "...unless you're a telemarketer. Ooooh, I can't stand telemarketers!"
The machine beeps, and with little else to go on, you leave your message. "Hi, Mom, it's Pete. I thought I'd drive up today and join you guys for dinner, but no one seems to be here right now. If you can hear me, come and let me in, please. Thanks!"
Your stomach starts to feel queasy with worry as you hang up, and you feel that you should try to get into the house on your own. You know that your family hides a spare key somewhere outside just in case an emergency crops up, so you might be able to track it down and unlock the front door yourself. Your mother may also be out in the backyard and unable to hear you knocking or calling, so you could also climb over the back fence and take a look out there. If she's really hurt or in trouble, though, it might be a better idea to call for help first. You don't have much time to decide.
