This choice: She got addicted to the latest energy drink. • Go Back...Chapter #4She got addicted to the latest energy drink. by: Unknown Twilight's eyes couldn't stop rolling around in her head as she watched Rainbow Dash zip and zig zag throughout the sky at breakneck speeds, unflinchingly rocketing through tight curves and complex loops in perfect sequence and timing to the sequence diagram from the map in Twilight's book.
"The cumulus double strike...the prismic 360...the gliding supercell..." She narrated from the page's map, barely able to keep up with the sheer speed Rainbow blazed through each step with. But Twilight could still identify the final few parts of the sequence as Rainbow flew dead straight and up in a wide arc, sloped down into a dizzying rainbow-colored figure eight, stung away and swirled through the two hoops, swirling them into a vortex before shooting up and down to split the tornado apart, sending a cloudy rain of shining, rainbow colored light down as she dove like a rock to the ground and slammed into the grass only a few feet from Twilight, who still jumped after how long she'd watched her.
"Time!"
"35 seconds!" Twilight read off of her stopwatch. "Wow, Rainbow, that's got to be the best-"
"GAH!!!" Rainbow spat in frustration. "Why can't my stupid wings fly any faster?!"
"Rainbow, that was one of your best times yet! You've got the record time in almost the entire town!"
"Don'tcha get, Twilight?! There's gonna be tons of ponies lining up for the auditions! How else am I gonna build up my chances of passing if there's so many others going just as hard?"
"Rainbow, it's not really a matter of being unable to be topped by everypony else, it's all about showing them yourself and doing your best for them! Besides, I'm sure that pushing yourself like this will just run you over your limits."
"Yeah, I know..." Rainbow grumbled, looking back on her times at the Wonderbolts Academy. But then again, she still knew how tight-ended the judges could be at these auditions. "...what if 'my best's' not good enough for them, though?"
"Don't worry. You're still one of the best fliers in Equestria!" Twilight enforced, placing a hoof on her friend's shoulder. "If they see you and don't give a second glance, they wouldn't have any idea who they could've dealing with!"
"I know...I just...I just wish I had some way to get a little thing above the others, you know?"
"Here, why don't we take a break?" Twilight recommended, stepping back the way to town. "I'm sure all this flying's got you exhausted!"
"Yeah, I guess you're right. Guess I'm getting kinda thirsty, anyway." Rainbow admitted as she followed Twilight, the two of heading back from the outskirts of Ponyville.
.....
"Aw, no Arctic Rush?" Rainbow complained upon seeing that the vending machine was fresh out. "Dangit, when are they gonna fix this dang thing!?"
"They might have some at the corner store down there!" Twilight noted.
The two of them walked down the street towards the corner where a small crowd was gathering in the street. Not an unusual sight in town, but the two took notice of a stand in the midst of the growing herd.
"What's going on?" Rainbow leapt up and with a flap of her wings flew down the street above the ponies in her way, giving her a nice view of a lime green pegasus with a green-and-white striped mane onstage in front of a banner picturing a green bottle with a white lightning bolt running through.
"IT'S THE SUPEREST-DUPEREST MOST ENERGY-TASTIC BOTTLE OF PURE SUGAR-LADEN PONY POWER YOU'LL EVER BENCH-PRESS YOUR TASTEBUDS WITH!!!" She shouted with an exuberance that would put Pinkie to shame, her pupils shrunk tight from sheer ecstasy. "ONE PULP OF PERK PRIME'S PEAK POWER POTION IS WHAT MADE ME THE PRIME POWERHOUSE OF PERK I AM TODAY!!!"
"...powerhouse?" Rainbow folded her wings down and swooped to the front of the crowd, to the bemusement of a few ponies at front.
"BEFORE I COULDN'T DREAM OF ALL THE THINGS I COULD DO BEING THE LAZY BUMMARINO I ONCE WAS, BUT NOW I CAN DO A THOUSAND AND MORE THAN ANYTHING I'D EVER DONE BEFORE ALL THANKS TO THE MIRACLE OF THE MOST ADRENALINE-FUELED SPORTS DRINK EVER MADE!!!"
"Adrenaline?" Rainbow repeated interestedly, an expression that caught Perk's eye.
"WE GOT US A CURIOUS CATHY, HERE!" In a flash she reached down and yanked Rainbow onto the stage with her. "DO YOU, MISSY, EVER THINK ABOUT ALL THE STUFF YOU COULD BE DONE'IN WITH PERK PRIME'S PEAK POWER POTION JUMPSTARTING YOUR SYSTEM?!" Rainbow flinched at the mare's volume in her ears.
"Uh...no, but-"
"THEN LET ENLIGTENMENT TAKE ITS COURSE!!!" Perk Prime seemed to reach from nowhere and shoved one if the bottles into her mouth, letting her gulp it down as though she were feeding a baby. "NOW, EVERYPONY, WATCH NATURE TAKE ITS COURSE!!!"
"What the HAY is your..." But just as Rainbow was about to wallop the mare she suddenly jolted as she felt a sharp, sudden jab of energy strike her in the pit of her stomach, slowly coursing through her veins with her legs shuddering at the passing sensation. It felt as though pure energy was coursing through her muscles, a sensation that Rainbow was quickly starting to welcome.
After grabbing a hold of her newfound rush, Rainbow smelled at the confidence-fueling feeling and leapt into the air and soared through several quick loops in the air, the audience murmuring approvingly at what they'd seen.
"YOU'D SEEN IT RIGHT NOW, RIGHT HERE, IN OUR EXACT PLANE OF EXISTENCE, LADIES AND GERMS! THIS PONY'S A NEW MARE READY TO SEE THE REST OF HER LIFE!!!"
"Holy crap, this is what I'd been needing!" Rainbow gibbered quickly, shaking the mare's hoof. "How can I get more?"
"WELL, MISS, AS SOMEPONY LUCID TO THE POWERS OF THE POWERHOUSE POTION I'LL GIVE YOU AN INSIDER DISCOUNT!!!" The mare reached behind her and swung in a cart filled with dozens of the drink. "FIFTY BITS FOR ALL THESE!!!"
"Deal!" Rainbow zipped away from the stage and took her saddlebag back from Twilight, who barely noticed it missing as Rainbow darted back. "Fifty bits!"
"GO, MISS, SEE THE WORLD BEYOND THE CHAINS BINDING YOU FROM THE HEAVENS ABOVE!!!"
After Rainbow dumped off fifty bits for the sales pony, she took her drinks and left the stage just as the audience grew into a loud, clattered murmur to sample some of the drink.
"EASY, FOLKS, THERE'S ENOUGH TO PILE AROUND!!!" She whooped, blinking her light eye to align her contact lens. But not enough for every sucker in town...
"Rainbow? What was going on up there?" Twilight asked as Rainbow returned with her bounty in tow.
"I struck gold, Twilight! I got just what I need for the audition!" Rainbow pulled out a drink and unscrewed the cap, taking a long sip from the drink inside. "This crazy pony was giving it away on stage and it made me feel alive!"
"ALive? What is it?"
"This awesome sport's drink! You gotta try it!"
"Uh..." Twilight gently pushed the drink away, unnerved by Rainbow's enthusiasm. "No thanks, I'm not a fan of energy drinks."
"Eh, suit yourself." Rainbow dipped the bottle back and downed the last of the drink, tossing the empty over her shoulder with a loud belch. BRAAAAP!!!
"Rainbow!"
"Heh, 'scuse me! C'mon, let's go see if any of the others wanna hang out!" Rainbow said as she walked past Twilight, taking another of the drinks from the cart.
But as Rainbow trotted by, Twilight caught a glimpse of something...different about Rainbow. She couldn't put her finger on it, but as she watched Rainbow move she picked up on a faint jiggle running through Rainbow's step. It was then that Twilight noticed that Rainbow's stomach looked somewhat rounder and hung down further than usual, puffing out a few inches further than the slim, tender waistline Rainbow'd had for years. Her legs also seemed a bit puffier, boasting an unfamiliar amount of paunch that bunched around her joints.
"Uh...Rainbow?"
"Now I'll be a shoe-in for...   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
