Sarah Cartwright was looking forward to her eighteenth birthday, even though there was still a month or so to go. After all, it was a milestone in a person's life. She was a student at Flemchester College studying five courses: History, Politics, Maths, Philosophy and Sociology. Current indications placed her as mediocre in all except for Philosophy, where she was currently marked as above average. She was a resident student, being 100 miles away from her home and parents, and had developed a close circle of friends who shared no less than three of her courses each. Sarah was a simple-looking girl about 5'4" with wavy sand-blonde hair that hung down to her shoulder blades and sky-blue eyes and was more likely to wear a blue camisole and rose-patterned flip-flops than the more grammar-school look that tended to prevail around the college campus.
Sarah's student accomodation was a four-roomed flat consisting of a living area, small kitchen, bathroom and a compact bedroom of which only the living area and bedroom had windows and was set on the third floor of a six-storey building just twenty yards from the main college building.
At this time Sarah didn't know if her application for a short break to visit her parents for her birthday would be approved or rejected. She was actually quite good at forward planning in spite of what most people initially assumed.
