Something in your mother's tone tells you that you should not push your luck. You eat your dinner in silence and then go to bed. It's hard to fall alseep, mostly because it's still light outside and you're not tired but also because you are worried about what your mother has planned for tomorrow. You must have eventually fallen asleep because you wake up early the next morning. You get up, have a shower and make yourself breakfast.You are watching TV when your mother gets up.
She eats her breakfast and tells you. "We'd better get moving. Mrs Hansen is expecting us early."
"We aren't studying today?" You ask, concerned. Mrs Hansen is a friend of your mother. She works from home as a dressmaker.
"No." Your mother tells you. "I think we can afford to take one day off." You follow your mother to her car. It is a short drive to Mrs Hansen's house.
"Hello Danielle." She greets you. "I'm going to make you such a beautiful dress."
"What?" You ask.
"Your mother explained that you couldn't play with dolls because you aren't a little girl." Mrs Hansen informs you. "So we are going to make you into the sweetest little girl ever. Then you can play with dolls whenever you like."
You look at your mother, hoping that this is a joke, but she smiles and tells you. "That's right sweetie. I can't wait to make you a little girl again."
"Well come in." Mrs Hansen says. "I need to have your dress ready before your tea party this afternoon."
You follow Your mother and her friend inside. Mrs Hansen starts by showing you and your mother photos of girls modelling the different styles of dress she can make for you. All of the girls in the photos look like they are under five years old. The dresses are all frilly and puffy. You cringe at the thought of wearing any of these.
Your mother likes them all. "I want one of these in baby blue, and one of these in pink and one of these in yellow, or and can you put the teddy bear print on the front..."
You don't like the sound of this. She wants more than one dress for you.
"Sure." Mrs Hansen says, writing down your mother's requests. "But I can only have one ready for this afternoon."
"Okay." She says. "Here Danielle. These are my two favorites. Choose what you would like to wear to the tea party." Has she gone mad? Does she really believe you want to wear any of these?
You examine the dresses. One is baby blue, the other is pink. The pink one is simpler. It has a full-length skirt, puffy selves and a ribbon tied in a large bow around the waist. The blue one is more childish. It's short skirt is puffed out by petticoats and a large white collar.
