Jonathan opened his mouth, unsure of how to respond. What could he say? He was still wrapping his mind around the sensations—how different the world felt from this perspective, how time slowed down in moments of self-consciousness, and how he couldn’t stop obsessing over everything from body language to lingering glances.
Before he could craft a response, Lea, Taylor’s fiancé, emerged from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a dishtowel. She had overheard the tail end of the conversation. “What’s this I’m hearing?” she chimed in, crossing her arms loosely over her chest, her demeanor shifting from friendly to intrigued. “What does it mean to be a woman for the week?”
Jonathan felt the blood rush to his face, his heart racing. “Uh—” he stammered, desperately searching for the right words, but nothing came. He could feel the trap closing around him, the weight of secrets threatening to spill over.
Lea raised an eyebrow, her expression unreadable. “Of course, you wouldn’t know,” she remarked coolly, tilting her head. “You must be too busy enjoying the perks of being a hot young woman now.”
Jonathan opened his mouth, poised to explain the confusion, the body swap, and how he was not really Jessica at all, but something held him back. Was it laziness? Fear of misunderstanding? Or perhaps… a burst of curiosity about what it felt like to inhabit this life, even temporarily? He glanced at Taylor, whose face hardened with concern.
“Lea, wait, it’s not what you think,” Taylor interjected, sensing the tension in the air. “There’s a lot going on here—”
“No, I want to hear this,” Lea said, cutting him off sharply. She fixed her gaze on Jonathan, and for a moment, he felt like he was under a microscope. “You’re going to tell me that you’re not just pretending to be a woman and enjoying it? Because it sounds to me like you’re getting off on this whole experience.”
Jonathan’s mind raced, racing to unravel the situation. “It’s… complicated,” he finally blurted out, the urgency of defending himself overriding restraint. “I didn’t choose to be here like this. It was a mix-up at the Body Port. I just wanted to go to Taylor’s wedding and somehow ended up in this body instead!”
Lea studied him for a long moment, her expression softening slightly. “A mix-up?”
“Yes,” Jonathan nodded, his heartbeat steadying as he felt more empowered to share his truth. “I just happened to be the unlucky guy who got caught in the crossfire. I didn’t ask for any of this, and I’m just as confused as everyone.”
