You were a guard at your local village, who finally had a day off. You often enjoyed walking through the woods in your free time, observing animals, finding nice flowers for your wife and relaxing by shallow stream, forgetting about the world's worries.
It was the first day you had off in a long time, there were troubling rumors of a sinister warlock, that stole people's souls and used their bodies to grow his army, while he used their souls to power his vile magic. Apparently entire settlements had already fallen to his might.
Your village was pretty close to his last rumored sighting, but it was a large town, not like the smaller settlements that had vanished. Still your captain wanted you on regular patrols. You were only given the day off because you liked walking the woods and were a fast runner, so even with your hobby you could provide an early warning.
As you were relaxing by the river, you heard a twig snap, which put you on alert straight away. You instinctively reached for a sword that wasn't there though you relaxed when you saw this frail young woman standing before you. She looked relatively young, only just reaching adulthood, but her clothes were all warn out and she smelt like she hadn't changed her clothes in a week. She was also unhealthily skinny, as if she hadn't eaten in since then either. Her lips were parched and she struggled to walk towards you.
"Are you alright ma'am?" You asked, trying to put on your best knightly impression. Though while you might've just been a guard, it was a dream for you to be a knight.
She didn't respond, as she walked closer towards you. She stumbled but you managed to grab her, then you saw her eyes, her black and hollowed eyes. She grabbed onto you tightly and wouldn't let go and began to try to drag you away, but she was too frail.
You pushed her away, causing her to hit her head hard against the tree. A blow like that would've knocked anyone else unconscious, but despite the blood now pouring out of the back of her head, she got up and came after you again.
"Don't make me hurt you..." you warned as you picked up a branch to defend yourself. Still she came at you, so you hit her leg as hard as you could, breaking it and your makeshift weapon, but her broken leg didn't stop her.
While you were distracted by the woman, you failed to hear more people approach and before you knew it you were bound and being dragged deeper into the woods by more black-eyed people.
You were taken into a clearing where there were hundreds of people camping out, most looked like the woman did, some were even clearly dead but still able to move around. You were taken to the center of the camp, where a red-eyed and black haired man with a purple gem around his neck looked down at you.
"Fresh meat," he smiled as he looked you over. "I guess that means there's a settlement around her, good my army needs a good refreshment."
He raised his arm at you and you felt your very essence being drawn out from your body. You found yourself as a formless light inside the gem around the warlock's neck. You could still see out the walls of the purple gem, though your former body, whose eyes were now black, looked like a giant.
"Now tell me where you came from?" Your memories of your village flashed through your mind, feeding the Warlock with all the information you needed.
Your body rose and stood aside as the woman you encountered stumbled into the camp. "He did a number on you..." the warlock said as he examined the body. "You're not going to be of use to me like that," the warlock gripped her cheeks tightly as you watched the youth fade from her body, her skin rotted away until she was just a skeleton and then nothing but dust. Some of the nearby soldiers with rotting flesh became more lively as the woman's essence was used to replenish their bodies.
You heard a high pitch scream as one of the other light balls inside the gem reacted to the death of their body. It was the soul of the woman you just fought. You fly over to her and find out
