Fortunately for the Nightmare, Applejack was completely and absolutely dead to the world so its work went unhampered. Screwing with a pony’s mind was surprisingly non-disruptive and it was still broad daylight so Luna detecting them was very unlikely. A slight limitation to its magic however was that its host needed to have some intense and corruptible emotion or desire to exploit as it was created from Luna’s jealousy. The Nightmare searched through Applejack’s memories thoroughly and eventually discovered one.
