"Come in, son. What can I do for you?"
You had gone back and forth about talking to Coach Stevens but finally decided to go for it.
"Well," you begin. "I've been thinking about what you said about the track team. I do like running and I would like to get in better shape and , well, I just don't feel that confident about going for it right now but I wondered if you could help me get ready for it?"
You blurted it out fast so you wouldn't stammer. What would the big man say? You would be mortified if I dismissed you but even more mortified if he said yes.
Coach Stevens looked me over. What was he thinking? Finally he smiled.
"Sure, son. I can help but we don't have much time until tryouts. Are you serious?
You nod, numb at the thought of that beautiful man with the bountiful belly giving you pointers.
"Well, here it is." Coach looked at me intently. "You seem like a sprinter to me- at least for the moment. Lets start with that."
Coach Stevens gave me a daily routine to follow and asked me to meet him in a week to check my progress.
"Let's meet at the track before school."
