You had just graduated from College and were offered a job for research at NanoCorp.
You had never heard of the company before, but you knew it was a great opportunity given how bland the name of the company was.
“Guys! I would like to welcome Gerald to our team! Everyone let’s make him feel like part of the team!”
You were surprised how chill all the other scientists on the team were. You had always seen fellow scientists be kinda snooty and stuck up- but these people were really cool.
“Alright, Gerald! Now that you’ve met the team, I want to introduce you to your boss.” Steve said.
“I thought you were my boss, Steve”
“I lead the researchers, but our ultimate boss is Science. And our science is right here. Gerald, it’s my pleasure to introduce you to SOPHIE”
Steve directed your attention to the chamber in the middle of the room.
“SOPHIE! Say hello to Gerald.”
“Good morning, Gerald. I am SOPHIE. I detect you’re feeling confused.”
“What is SOPHIE?” You asked.
“Have you ever heard of nanites?”
“In passing.”
“Nanites are basically dynamic atoms. They nano technology capable of making themselves ANYTHING. It’s fairly new technology, groundbreaking as is. But SOPHIE is different.”
“Why’s that?”
“Because SOPHIE uses artificial intelligence. This technology is going to be HUGE in the medical field- but what’s better than technology that can be told what it needs to be? Technology that already knows.”
“That’s amazing!”
“You think that’s cool? Check this out!” Steve said, “SOPHIE! I don’t think Gerald here appreciates talking to a faceless voice, why don’t you introduce yourself to him? Keep your eye on the mannequin in there, Gerald!”
The bare mannequin was instantly dressed in a formal business dress as a projector shined on the head and greeted Gerald, “Hello Gerald, it is SOPHIE! It’s a pleasure to meet you!”
“That’s incredible! Where did that come from?!”
“The outfit was made instantaneously through the Nanites, the projection was operated by SOPHIE! Once this is released into the real world, we’re all going to go down in history! Even you!”
