"What the hell?" Erin mumbles, cinching her robe tighter at the collar.
A quick scan of the floor by her bed confirms it. The clothes she laid out were nowhere to be found. Erin got a sinking feeling in her stomach before she even started rifling through her drawers. Gretchen had taken every last stitch of clothing out of her room, including her bed sheets. Erin sank to the floor, her trembling legs no longer able to hold her up. Yesterday, Erin confirmed her parents locked the door to their bedroom before leaving, denying her access to any of her mother's clothes. The only thing she had to wear was the robe on her back, and there's a spectacular array of reasons why that is not nearly enough.
An idea struck Erin and she popped up like a jack-in-the-box. She raced off to the bathroom, realizing worn, unwashed clothes were in there before she left moments ago. Hopefully Gretchen hadn't gotten her hands on them and something was at least presentable. Then again, just about anything would be better than the robe. This hope too, however, was crushed under Gretchen's rule. Not even a hand towel was left. Erin even tore apart the linen closet, hoping Gretchen had missed this blind spot, only to fall back onto her rear on the verge of tears. It took all her might to hold them back, knowing Gretchen would only make things worse if she started crying.
"Erin!" she heard Gretchen call. "Breakfast is ready. Hurry up before it gets cold."
Erin sighed and composed herself. It's not like the situation was going to get better all of a sudden.
'Who knows?' she thought. 'Maybe Gretchen will give me something to wear if I play along for now.'
