"Hey James!! Quit daydreaming man!" yelled a slightly annoyed male voice. It was coming from a young male, about 21 years of age. It was directed at another boy, similarly aged. That boy turned around, sheepishly smiling as he did.
"Sorry man. Guess I let my daydreaming get the best of me" said the boy, chuckling as he did, getting a sigh from the other boy. A girl that was also with the two of them gently giggled.
"Seriously James! You're always such a daydreamer!" said Nate Wilson. He always had to wake up his childhood friend, James Walker, from his constant daydreaming. While it annoyed him somewhat, Erin Wilson, Nate's twin who was the girl of the group, found it to be one of James' best qualities. The sky was the limit for James. That's what she always thought.
James Walker, the man in question, had always been obsessed with dreams of flying. As a young boy, he always watched birds and how they were free to soar through the skies and explore to their hearts' content. He also saw pilots go up in planes, jets, and all kinds of other aircrafts. He could only imagine the joy that came with flying through the air. To him, it felt like freedom. Freedom to go anywhere he wanted and explore new places. It was to that end that he was attending college and would probably soon begin a pilot's class nearby. It would likely start the next semester.
'If only I had wings' thought James. He chuckled at the thought, as he saw the naivety of it all. That could never happen so he had to settle for learning to be a pilot. Anyway, it was close to the end of another springsday for the trio of friends. The sun was beginning to set and they had to head for their separate homes.
"Now don't sleep in tomorrow! We're getting to the beach bright and early, right?" said Nate, his usual enthusiasm showing itself, earning a laugh from the other members of the group.
"Sure thing buddy. You both take care now" said James as he gave Nate their usual hand shake. Erin hugged him as they went their separate ways. As James watched his two friends leave, he couldn't help but feel that he might not see them again for a long time.
"Must be my imagination" muttered James as he began to walk in the direction of his house. For a while, it was a peaceful walk. Not many people out, and things were pretty quiet. James liked the quiet. However, it was interrupted when he started hearing metal clashing in a nearby alley. It sounded like trash cans being tossed around.
"What the hell?" asked James as he slowly walked towards the alley and reeped along the edge, trying to get a good look at the situation. However, nothing could have prepared him for what he saw once he slowly looked around the corner.
"What the-..."
There were four people there: three guys and a girl. There was something off and creepy about the guys, as they walked and swayed like men posessed. However, that wasn't the surprising part. It was the girl. She had dark hair which almost had traces of indigo in the feint light. She wore what looked like a loose-fitting navy tank top with what looked like a matching, feathered skort. She also wore a red sash around her waist. On her feet looked to be simple brown boots that covered her feet and calves. However, despite the beauty that seemed to radiate from the girl, it was something else that grabbed James' attention.
The reason why? On her back, shining radiantly through the emerging darkness of the evening, was a glowing pair of wings.
Radiant and bird-like in shape, her wings gave a soft glow that seemed to warm James even from this distance from her. Primarily, they were a combination of white and lavender colors, emiting an otherworldly presence.
'Who, or what, is she?' James thought in his mind. At first, he must have thought that he was dreaming, or that he finally jumped off the deep end. However, after even pinching himself to try and 'wake up', the girl and guys were still there. However, once James was able to come to terms that they were real, he paied attention to what they were doing. The guys seemed to be gathered around the girl, and James didn't like the look in their eyes.
"Heh heh, a pretty one tonight. I figure those wings of yours may make a good meal" chuckled one man. The other two guys laughed as well as the girl seemed to buckle under their gaze.
"I-I'm not afraid of you. Release those humans at once!" said the girl, stuttering a bit as she did. James had no idea what she meant by her words but he could tell that she was scared. The men didn't believe her words and laughed more. Regardless of how odd James found the girl, he didn't like the thought of guys ganging on a poor girl. He had to take action!
"Hey bozos! Pick on somebody your own size!" said James as he rushed in and knocked one man into a nearby trash can. One of the other guys tried to tackle James but he dodged him and twisted his arms behind his back, making the man yell in pain. He then threw the man onto the one who was allready knocked out.
"Heh, all bark and no bite" said James. However, he was in for a shock as a black shadow started to emerge from the men's mouths, hissing at James as they did. He suddently felt very uncomfortable as he was dealing with things beyond his comprehension. He had to get the girl, who was watching the whole thing in shock, and get away from here.
"You!" he yelled, gesturing to the fear-striken girl. "Come with m.." he said before a cold and painful feeling feeling came from his chest. Looking to the side, he had forgotten about the third man, who had just shot him. In a second, James collasped to the ground.
'Guess I...got in..over my...head' thought James as he felt his life bleeding away.
"NOOO!" yelled the girl who watched her fallen hero hit the ground, barely alive for now. His heart and lungs were untouched but the massive wound would surely cause him to bleed to death. His eyesight already blurring as he felt his life start to bleed away. Then, he heard a loud and commanding voice.
"Attack! Restrain those men!' yelled the voice, which sounded female. It was hard to tell for James due to his blurring eyesight, but two figures suddenly showed up and took down the remaining man and retrieved the other two. There was a burst of light and the shadows seemed to fully burst out of the mean and dissappear. The bodies collasped, unconscious but finally free of the shadows that haunted them.
'Who......are......they?' thought James as he laid there, finally passing out due to blood loss.
