Chapter #8

Arriving in Hawaii...

    by: fantaghiro Author IconMail Icon
You breathe a sigh of relief when you finally get to the resort. The flight over was long and uncomfortable for you. Your mom - 'Jackie' - managed to sleep much of the way, but your mind was racing too much for you to relax. You kept looking over at the woman in your wife's body, trying to make sense of it all. And you were worried about how the real Jackie was doing.

You set your bags down in the room. Your mom tells you to get some rest - that you look terrible. "I'll explore the resort and maybe try out the pool," she says.

"Yeah, I think I'll do that," you answer. "But first I want to call Jackie."

Your mom gives you an appraising look. "I think that's a good idea. I'm sure she could use a reminder that you love her." She goes into the bathroom to change into a swimsuit and coverup, obviously not feeling comfortable about changing in front of you. Once she's gone you pull out your cell phone and hit the speed dial for your mother.

"Hello, Gerry?" you hear your mother's voice. "Hey Jackie," you say, trying to sound upbeat. "We're here. It looks nice but I miss you terribly - I can't wait until you get here."

She's silent for a moment, then answers "I can't wait to see you either. It's been hard. Everyone has been congratulating me and wanting to talk about the wedding. I've just put on a smile and pretended to be a proud mother. But I'm glad I'm leaving - I don't think I could take much more of this."

"How are you holding up?" you ask. "Mom seems to be adapting well enough. I think she'll have some advice for us on how to deal with all this."

There's a wistful tone to her voice that you've never heard from your mom. "Honestly, it's very weird. I'm surprisingly comfortable in her body but still get a shock when I look in the mirror or take a bath. And going through her clothes to pack for the flight - it just drives home that I'm not 'me' anymore. And some of my tastes are different. This morning I found that I like my coffee black for instance. It makes me wonder what else has changed..."

"Don't worry, Jackie," you say comfortingly. "The most important thing hasn't changed - our love for each other. No matter what, you're the woman I want to spend my life with. Never forget that!"

Over the phone you can almost pretend that nothing's changed, that she's not in your mother's body. You're not sure how well you'll deal with her in person, but for now you know she needs your reassurances.

You can almost hear her smile. "I love you, Gerald Duncan," she says warmly. "You are the best thing in my life and I don't want to lose you."

"You won't!" you say firmly.

You chat for awhile longer until your yawning becomes noticeable. "You sound exhausted!" she says. "Get some rest. I should be there sometime the day after tomorrow. Try to relax and have some fun. I'll be there soon."

You pledge your love to each other again and she hangs up. You feel a little better after having spoken to Jackie, so lay down and manage to fall asleep without too much trouble.

You have the following choices:

*Noteb*
1. You awake the next morning and spend the day with your mom.

2. Jackie arrives 2 days later.

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
