Your nerves were already frayed from the onslaught of mistrust and fear emanating from the crowd. The child's collision with your snout was a surprise, jolting you out of your uneasy thoughts. You instinctively rose to your full height in one swift motion, your claws scraping against the cobblestone street in surprise.
The collective gasp from the crowd only heightened the tension. The child lay there on the ground, wide-eyed and stunned, looking up at you with a mix of fear and fascination. You fixed your gaze on him, your deep rumbling growl reverberating through the square.
However, before you could do anything further, a firm hand rested on your flank. "Easy, Arrow," Samuel's appeared to have quickly returned seeing the commotion. You turned your head to see him standing there, having emerged from a store just in time.
You couldn't understand what you had done wrong. After all, the child had collided with you, stirring your nervous unrest. The unjustness of it all rankled within you. Looking back at Samuel. You could tell what he wanted you to do. Displeased at the action you lowered your head and grumbled softly, an apology of sorts to the boy.
"Sorry, mister," the child finally piped up, pushing himself off the ground and dusting his clothes. His gaze held a flicker of defiance that almost made you admire him. "Didn't mean to run into your dragon."
Samuel gave the boy a gentle smile. "That's alright, son. Just be more careful next time, okay?"
As the day wore on, the tension in the village square eased somewhat. You had learned the hard way that moving around caused quite the flurry of activity and quickly realized that the best move would be to remain in one spot. Samuel returned a few times talking accompanied by a tavern-keep to retrieve some of the larger items you were hauling such as barrels full of a fluid you had found difficult to carry. However, when they would approach their conversation would shift. You had difficulty understanding why. You grew restless as the day progressed. You wanted to move, disliking the stiffness of your limbs. Fortune would be on your side however as you soon witnessed your friend saying his goodbyes before returning to you. As you returned home with Samuel that day, a heavy silence hung over you.
