Harry was a ball of emotions after being selected by the Goblet of Fire as the fourth champion to compete in the TriWizard Tournament. He felt angry with the students for turning their backs on him for the second time since they've been at Hogwarts. He felt betrayed at Ron for believing that he cheated his way into competing in the tournament. He felt scared about the tasks to come. He felt fearful that Voldemort was involved somehow.
But through it all, ig gave Harry clarity that Hermione was the most important person in his life. She did not betray him and offered to help him get ready for the tournament. Harry was determined to do anything to make sure Hermione didn't leave him; he felt he would break if that happened.
However, his new found devotion to Hermione meant that he took things so far that Hermione knew something was up. Harry carried her books for her when they shared the same classes, he tried to stop asking Hermione for regular homework help so as not to disturb her (but Hermione made sure to help anyway), and when they were in the library, he would get her books without magic, exhausting him physically and then being too tired to do any studying.
During the second such study session to prepare Harry for the tournament, Hermione decided to get to the bottom of it. A few seconds later, Harry came back with the latest book that she wanted.
"Here you go, Hermione. I was able to find it, said Harry as he was panting a bit.
"Thanks Harry, but we need to talk. I appreciate all the help you are giving me recently, but you're not even training for the tournament. The first task will be here before we know it. You're acting more like my errand boy than my best friend."
"Was it that obvious? I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable, but this whole tournament has made me realize that you are the one that's keeping me from losing sanity. I don't know wht I'd do if you left me too."
Hermione felt a pang of sympathy as she knew that Ron's abandonment hurt Harry the most. But she couldn't wrap her mind about what Harry was saying.
'Harry didn't even blink when I called him my errand boy. I understand wanting to help me a bit, but it's like he's willing to lower himself to me just to make sure I don't leave him. Perhaps I should give him a task so degrading that it'll surely knock back,' thought Hermione.
"I understand, Harry. But you really must get to training for the tournament. So what I am about to ask you to do, think of this as part of your training."
As Hermione was about to give him his task, Hermione had another thought.
'What if he actually does what I am about to ask? Am I willing to go down this rabbit hole with him, wherever it leads for us?'
