That night, at 9:30, Chris put on his pajamas and climbed into bed and set his alarm to get up for school the next morning. He had always been something of a sound sleeper, so he had a loud, industrial-strength alarm clock, the noise of which would fill the house every morning. Luckily, he usually was the last one to wake up.
As he slept, his body began to change, and fast. He had no way of knowing, but a random mutation in his genetic code had caused his pituitary gland to secrete growth hormone that was significantly more potent than normal, and his body was extremely susceptible to it. By 10:30, he had already grown a foot taller, and his pajama shirt and pants were straining to stay together.
By midnight, his feet and arms were hanging off the bed, and his clothing had ripped off, leaving only shreds of fabric hanging from his body. Through all this, Chris didn't wake up, blissfully unaware of the transformation he was going through. When his bed began to creak and groan, finally snapping under the significant weight increase it had to deal with, Chris still remained asleep, but the sound of his bed snapping into pieces awoke Nate, whose room was next door.
Nate didn't like being woken up, especially after midnight on a school night. He had no idea what caused the sound, but he knew that his little brother was going to pay for it this time, he thought to himself. He jumped out of bed, slipped on his boxers so that he wouldn't be completely nude, and stormed out of his room. He didn't even think about knocking on Chris's door. Swinging it wide open, he started to shout, "Hey, twerp, what do you think you're--"
He stopped, his mouth hanging wide open, when he saw his brother's massive form laying on the ground in front of him. Chris had to be over ten feet tall by now, and by all accounts, he still looked to be growing! Nate knew something was seriously out of place, and his first instinct was to run off screaming, but he kept quiet, trying to figure out what the hell was going on here.
As he watched his brother, he was dumbfounded. How could anyone, especially his shrimpy little brother, get so huge?! However, Nate soon became aware of something…
