Oh, Hell! Somehow it didn’t seem too bad being dressed up as a girl here with someone you barely know, but having to present yourself to the others seems rather daunting – although you realize you’ll need to overcome that fear if you’re going to proceed with the project. So reluctantly you agree. “Great.” Sarah says. “Now, I know you’re not entirely comfortable about this, but I think you’re looking pretty good. So I suggest we don’t just roll you out for the boys to criticize, but try something a little different - which should prove to you that you’re actually doing OK. Just treat it all like you’re acting – pretending to be a different person, a different character. It just happens that the person you are trying to be is a girl. Let’s see who can tell.”
Sarah leads you out of the house through the kitchen and tells you to go around to the front of the house and ring the front door bell, and then to follow her lead. She disappears back into the kitchen, leaving you walking around outside the house, dressed as a school girl, or more accurately looking like a school girl, and feeling very exposed and self conscious.
You ring the bell, and wait. You can hear a noise inside, and clearly Sarah is making her way to open the door. As she opens it from the inside she welcomes you enthusiastically as if a long lost girlfriend, in full sight of the boys, and welcomes you inside. She then introduces you to the boys as being Tilly, one of her friends, and offers you a drink of lemonade.
Remembering what Sarah had said to you, you accept, and Sarah suggests you sit for a moment. Again, recalling Sarah's instructions, you don't flump into a chair as you would have before, but perch delicately on the front edge, keeping your knees and feet together and pointing your toes. Whilst you are totally self conscious you try to keep in character, and manage to engage in small talk with Sarah and the boys, although you are really struggling. You can tell from his expression that Robin (Sarah’s brother) has seen through the scam almost instantly, but he keeps quiet. However, two of the others don’t seem to have much of a clue, and you are sure they are eyeing you up.
After several minutes Sarah stands up, as if remembering something. “Oh blast.” She says. “I forgot that I’ve left Tony in my room – I’d better go to check on him. Would you like to come too Tilly?” For a second you don’t respond, forgetting that was your assumed name, and wondering who Sarah was talking to. However, you remember in time, and stand up, and follow Sarah from the room.
Once back to Sarah’s room you can relax, and consider the reaction that you had outside.
“That went well!” Sarah says. “Robin saw through you at once, but that’s no surprise, but I think the others fell for your new persona. Well done!”
She picks up her phone, and after a few moments pressing keys, put it down again. “OK. I’ve told Robin to leave us alone for a while now. Right, how do you fancy…”
