It’s morning. The sun has risen, and it’s quite light inside the tent. You check your watch to find it’s only 6am. Well, to be honest you knew it would be an early start. Millie however still seems to be asleep, and whilst you’re tempted to wake her, she’ll only be annoyed at you and be grumpy all day, so you decide to let her be. You can tell you won’t be able to settle again, so decide to get washed and ready for the day. You grab your towel and washbag, then search for your shoes. Odd, you were quite sure they were by the door last night, but now all you can find are Millie’s. You realize it must have been those you used during the night. Well, rather than wake Millie now asking if she knows where your shoes are, you pull on hers again and clamber out from the tent.
A while later you return. Millie is now awake and moving around.
“Morning sleepy head.” you say.
“Morning Tony.” Millie replies, noticing your footwear. “Are my shoes okay for you?”
“Um, oh, yes. They're fine... I couldn't find mine earlier.” Actually, you’re finding her shoes really comfy.
“Oh, yours are over there...” she says, pointing to one side of the tent's opening.”
“OK, well that's odd. I didn't see them earlier.”
“Well, they're there now. I borrowed them in the middle of the night, but put them
back. I must say I found them really warm and comfy, and they didn't hurt my blister like mine did yesterday.”
“What? You didn't say anything about a blister...”
“Well, no. I knew it would just hold us up, so I didn't mention it. So, my shoes fit you OK?”
“Yeah. They're actually quite comfy. Guess without my socks there’s a bit more room.” You reply. They do seem to have a slightly higher arch support than yours that’s giving you a bit of extra spring to your step.
“Okay, so would you like to trade shoes?”
“What? Why would I want to do that?”
“Because my shoes are rubbing my blister. Yours are warm and comfy, don’t rub the blister, and you just admitted you think mine are comfy. Really, it's a no-brainer”.
“Yes, but yours are girl's shoes and mine are boy's shoes...”
“I think our feet are really much the same you know. Girls don't have an extra toe or anything. Okay, it's your choice. We could swap shoes, or I can slow down our progress today and be bitter and twisted by the time we get to our next stop.”
“Okay, okay. We'll swap shoes for today.” you say, admitting defeat.
“Thanks,” Millie responds, “I’ll get some of my socks out for you to use.”
“Um... why?”
“Your shoes are a size bigger. Your feet won't fit into my shoes with your hiking socks on as they're quite thick, but they'd be perfect to protect my blister in your shoes.”
You have a feeling you are being manipulated just a bit, but admit she has a reasonable case.
“Okay, we'll swap socks as well then.”
You get dressed, in a clean tee shirt, your hiking pants, ready to put on Millie’s shoes and socks, although somewhat surprised at the choice of socks she pulls out for you to choose from.

These aren’t what you had anticipated.
“But they're all pink... with your pink shoes!” you exclaim.
“My shoes aren't pink. They're fuchsia and rouge. That's completely different. Besides, you agreed to swap, and I’m giving you a choice from what I’ve got. It’s not as if I want to swap, but I want to protect my blister…”
Oh dear. The voice is starting to crack a little, and you can see her face starting to flush. That normally is a prelude to tears.
“Okay. They'll be okay.” say, resigned to a day with pink footwear.
Which pair do you chose?
