Since you were all in the school's highest academic stream, your class schedules were identical, though of course you could change those schedules whenever you wanted. With Karen and Ashley you headed toward your first class, history.
"Oh," you said, "I should note that we can talk telepathically now." You switched to your telepathic voice. "Like this."
"This is cool," said Karen telepathically.
"Very cool," agreed Ashley.
The curriculum began where it had left off last year, at the start of World War I.
As the teacher droned on about life in the trenches, Karen piped up silently. "Hey, Amanda, wouldn't this be more fun if we were actually experiencing it?"
Ashley added, "Yeah, it would really add something to the lesson."
"I question your ideas of 'fun,' but sure." With a thought your entire class, and the teacher, were a platoon manning a trench in World War I.
"Whoa," said Karen. "Why are we in these bodies?"
"They didn't put women on the front lines, Karen," said Ashley. "But this is pretty interesting."
From a distance you heard machine-gun fire. You ran toward one of the emplacements in the trench and, when the noise stopped, returned fire. Karen and Ashley looked at you, a bit surprised.
"Well? You wanted to be here!"
They realized that they were in a World War I trench for real, and ran to man other emplacements.
After some time you returned the class to their original time, which sadly included bringing a few of them back from the dead.
"So," asked Karen, "will they remember?"
"No," you replied, "but they will have a better understanding of life in the trenches than almost anyone else alive."
The rest of the class was pretty boring, but you had fun watching as the rest of the class was utterly oblivious to all the changes you made to the teacher. He ranged from being two feet to eight feet tall, wimp to musclebound, fresh out of college to near retirement, and as a woman he went from flat-chested nerd girl to stunning model. You restored him to his original body at the end of class, of course.
"So," you asked, "what class do you want next?"
